Panthers split with W-DC, RLF
Hat tricks were the difference as the Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team split games last week.
Sam Coborn's hat trick and two assists led the Panthers to a 7-1 Mid-State Conference win over Wadena-Deer Creek Thursday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.
Garrett Schmitz tallied a hat trick in leading Red Lake Falls to a 5-1 Section 8A win over the Panthers Saturday afternoon at Red Lake Falls.
The win over W-DC gave the Panthers a 2-2-1 record in conference play while the loss to Red Lake Falls dropped the Panthers to 3-5 against Section 8A teams. Park Rapids is 7-7-1 overall.
Panthers sweep Wolverines
Coborn's fourth hat trick of the season helped the Panthers defeat W-DC for the second time this season.
Levi Erickson's power-play goal at the 9:19 mark of the first period gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Ian Johnson and Coborn assisted on that first goal of the game. Park Rapids held a 21-12 edge in shots on goal in the opening period.
After W-DC tied the game, a four-goal second period put the Panthers in control. Coborn scored on the power play 1:43 into the second period and followed with another goal at the 4:47 mark. Johnson assisted on the first goal and Erickson set up the second goal. Johnson's goal at the 5:48 mark and Erickson's goal at the 9:02 mark gave the Panthers a 5-1 advantage. Kyle Kanten assisted on Johnson's goal while Johnson and Coborn set up the Panthers' fourth goal of the period. Park Rapids dominated the second period with a 25-7 advantage in shots.
Another power-play goal completed Coborn's hat trick 46 seconds into the third period. Johnson and Kanten were credited with assists on that goal. Frank Moren scored the game's final goal 1:14 into the final period. Bailey Mueller and Kody Walsh had assists on that goal. The Panthers outshot W-DC 12-8 in the final period.
Goalie Scott Smith made 26 saves for the Panthers, who went 3 for 7 on the power play and finished with a 58-27 edge in shots.
The loss dropped the Wolverines to 0-5 in the conference and 4-12 overall. Park Rapids also defeated W-DC 7-1 earlier in the season.

Schmitz keys win by RLF
Red Lake Falls scored the game's final five goals to prevail in this battle of section rivals.
Coborn set up Noah MacPherson at the 6:14 mark of the opening period to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
Schmitz scored twice in a span of 27 seconds to give Red Lake Falls a 2-1 lead after the first period. Red Lake Falls held a 19-7 edge in shots in the opening period.
Max Martocq scored on the power play early in the second period to give Red Lake Falls a 3-1 edge. RLF held a 13-6 edge in shots in that period.
Schmitz completed his hat trick midway through the third period and Andrew Jahnke scored at the 14:15 mark to seal the win. RLF outshot the Panthers 16-7 in the third period.
Smith finished with 43 saves as RLF held a 48-20 advantage in shots in improving to 5-1 in the section and 9-4 overall.
