Panthers split section games with C-I, Roseau

     Zach Jewison scored a career-high 21 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in leading the Park Rapids boys basketball team to a 70-58 win at Roseau Saturday.

     The Panthers fell to 1-1 in Mid-State Conference play with a 65-58 loss to Crosby-Ironton Friday night at the Area High School gym before improving to 2-3 against Section 8AA opponents and 4-3 overall with the win at Roseau.

Jacobs leads C-I past Panthers

     Riley Jacobs scored a game-high 27 points and the Rangers hit six free throws in the final 51 seconds to defeat Park Rapids in this game between conference and section rivals.

     Jacobs hit four baskets inside and Daniel Hudrlik scored inside to surpass 1,000 career points as the Rangers jumped out to a 15-6 lead with 14:25 to play in the first half.

     A 3-pointer by Jordan McCollum, two layups by Rilee Johnson and a layup by Jewison cut the gap to 16-15 at the 7:18 mark.

     Johnson’s three inside baskets and a basket off a rebound by Wyatt Derman gave the Panthers a 24-21 advantage with 1:48 to play in the first half before a 3-pointer by Cam Larson capped a 7-0 run as C-I carried a 28-24 lead into the break.

     Two free throws by Derek Porozinski and back-to-back 3-pointers by McCollum gave the Panthers a 32-30 advantage at the 15:19 mark before two layups by Jacobs and another by Hudrlik gave C-I a 37-32 edge at the 13:27 mark.

     Jumpers by Derman, McCollum and Johnson, a three-point play by Bryce Brovitch, a layup by McCollum, a basket off a rebound by Brovitch and a jumper by McCollum kept Park Rapids within 48-47 with 5:48 to play.

     A 3-pointer by Will Goodwin and a jumper by Jacobs pushed the Rangers’ lead to 54-47 with 4:24 to go before two free throws apiece by Riley Massie, Derman and Porozinski and a jumper by McCollum cut the gap to 59-56 with 54 seconds remaining.

     Two free throws apiece by Goodwin, Jacobs and Hudrlik gave C-I a 65-56 lead with 32 seconds left.

     Goodwin finished with 13 points as the Rangers improved to 2-0 in the conference, 1-1 against section teams and 3-1 overall.

     McCollum had 17 points and five steals, Johnson had 14 points and six rebounds, and Jewison had 10 points and six rebounds to lead the Panthers. Porozinski and Jewison led the way with four assists each.

Panthers overcome foul trouble

     The Panthers overcame foul trouble to hand Roseau its fourth loss in a row.

     Jewison scored 13 points while Derman and McCollum hit two 3-pointers apiece as the Panthers carried a 40-32 lead into the half.

     Three baskets by Johnson and two by Derman gave the Panthers a 58-46 lead with 3:55 to go before two baskets by Jewison and a basket and two free throws by Massie sealed the win.

     Derman and Johnson added 14 points each while McCollum finished with 10 as four Panthers scored in double figures. Johnson hauled down eight rebounds and Massie had seven assists as the Panthers prevailed despite being whistled for 28 fouls.

     Jacob Eaton led three players in double figures for Roseau, which fell to 2-2 against section teams and 3-4 overall.
