Panthers skate past LPGE/WDC
A three-goal third period led the Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team to a 6-3 win over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Wadena-Deer Creek Tuesday night at Wadena.
The Blue Devils held a 3-2 lead in the second period before Park Rapids scored the game's final four goals.
Goals by Hannah Williams and Leeza Tostenson gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead after the first period. Heather Brostrom assisted on Williams' game-tying goal at the 9:13 mark before Danika Aletto set up Tostenson for the go-ahead goal with 1:04 remaining in the period. The Panthers held a 19-5 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period.
LPGE/WDC opened the second period by scoring twice in the first 1:21 to claim a 3-2 advantage. Jessica Gapinski's goal with 5:51 to play tied the game. Williams assisted on that game-tying goal.
Williams scored the game-winner with 12:44 to play. Tostenson assisted on that goal. McKenna Brand sealed the win with a pair of goals. Brand gave the Panthers a 5-3 lead with 10:05 to play and added an empty-net goal with 1:10 remaining. Ashley Thelen set up Brand's first goal while Aletto had an assist on the game's final goal.
The Panthers ended the game with a 43-22 advantage in shots. Goalie Bailey Moore finished with 19 saves as the Panthers improved to 5-9-2 on the season with their second win against the Blue Devils. Park Rapids defeated LPGE/WDC 5-1 earlier this season.
The Panthers, who hosted International Falls Friday night, travel to Babbitt-Embarrass Tuesday night.
