Panthers settle for a tie
Failing to take advantage of scoring opportunities resulted in the first tie of the season for the Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team Tuesday night.
The Panthers held a 51-21 advantage in shots on goal, but went 0-for-6 on the power play in settling for a 2-2 Mid-State Conference tie with Northern Lakes at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.
Andy Sorben gave Northern Lakes a 1-0 lead after the first period before goals by Sam Coborn and Levi Erickson gave the Panthers a 2-1 advantage in the second period. Erickson set up Coborn at the 9:25 mark and followed with the go-ahead goal at the 11:05 mark.
Northern Lakes tied the game on Kyler Decent's goal at the 12:14 mark of the second period.
The Panthers dominated the third period, holding a 19-2 edge in shots. However, Northern Lakes goalie Joey Bergquist stopped all 19 shots to preserve the tie.
In overtime, the Panthers had a two-man advantage for 46 seconds but couldn't capitalize.
Park Rapids goalie Scott Smith finished with 19 saves. The Panthers and Northern Lakes are both 1-1-1 in conference play and 4-5-1 overall.
