After opening with a 6-1 win over East Grand Forks, the Panthers won the close matches to defeat Thief River Falls 5-2.

In the win over East Grand Forks, the Panthers dominated the three doubles matches. Julia Renner and Christina Smith lost only two games at the No. 1 spot, Sarena Kinkel and Lindsey Girtz didn’t drop a game at the No. 2 position, and Ali Walsh and Mariena Dearstyne lost only one game at the No. 3 spot to lead the way. Julia Smith and Hope Johnson posted straight-set wins while Charity Ridlon won a third-set tiebreaker to lead the way in singles.

The match against Thief River Falls was a lot closer as four matches went into a third-set tiebreaker. Johnson and Ridlon won in straight sets while Julia Smith won a tiebreaker in singles. In doubles, the Christina Smith/Renner and Walsh/Dearstyne duos prevailed with 10-8 scores in tiebreakers while Girtz and Kinkel lost in a tiebreaker.

Park Rapids, which stayed in the No. 9 spot in this week’s state Class A poll, improved to 13-1 in dual meets.

Weather once again postponed the completion of the Mid-State Conference tournament. The tournament, which started last Saturday and was scheduled to be completed on Wednesday, was postponed again and will be completed this Wednesday (Sept. 25) starting at 1 p.m. at the Depot Courts.
