Panthers serve up first varsity wins

Having four players win their first varsity matches provided some of the highlights for the Park Rapids girls tennis team at last Saturday's Park Rapids Invitational.

Freshman Julia Renner made her varsity debut by claiming runner-up honors at No. 3 singles, junior Kelsey Adolphson and sophomore Taylor Wheeler finished fourth at No. 3 doubles in their varsity debuts, and sophomore Lexi Burlingame won her first varsity match by teaming with sophomore Katie Walsh to place seventh at No. 2 doubles.

Senior Mary Kading placed fourth at No. 2 singles, junior Alyssa Carlson finished fifth at No. 1 singles, junior Karly Dickinson and sophomore Allie Girtz finished sixth at No. 1 doubles, and freshman Sam Boyd finished eighth at No. 4 singles as the Panthers finished sixth in this eight-team tournament with 12 points. Moorhead won the team title with 29 points.

"I thought the girls did a really nice job considering we had five girls getting their first varsity experience," said Park Rapids head coach Nicole Brandt.

Team scores: Moorhead 29, Roseau 22, East Grand Forks 20, Thief River Falls 19, Minnewaska Area 15, Park Rapids 12, Fergus Falls 11, Wadena-Deer Creek 8.

Panthers drop three duals

The Panthers began their dual season by dropping three matches on the road.

Renner's straight-set win at No. 2 singles provided the Panthers' only point in a 6-1 loss at Fergus Falls Tuesday. Girtz and Walsh lost in three sets at No. 2 doubles while Kading and Dickinson dropped a pair of tiebreakers at No. 1 doubles.

At Sauk Centre Wednesday, the Panthers followed a 5-2 loss to Sauk Centre with a 4-3 loss to Yellow Medicine East.

Kading and Carlson won in straight sets at No. 1 doubles while Dickinson and Girtz prevailed in straight sets at No. 2 doubles to lead the Panthers against Sauk Centre.

Against YME, Kading and Carlson won at No. 1 doubles, Dickinson and Girtz were victorious at No. 2 doubles, and Renner prevailed in a tiebreaker at No. 1 singles.

The Panthers travel to Crookston for a tournament today (Saturday) and will return home to host Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, Pequot Lakes and Crookston Tuesday and Detroit Lakes and Crosby-Ironton in two Mid-State Conference matches Thursday.
