Panthers run away with title

     A pair of lopsided wins led the Park Rapids boys basketball team to the title at the Park Rapids Holiday Tournament.

     The Panthers opened the tournament with an 80-24 rout of Warroad last Friday night and followed with a 65-45 victory over Frazee in the championship game last Saturday.

     The two wins gave Park Rapids a 7-3 overall record.

     “Our team has been playing well so far. We have a good scheme and the kids are buying into it and executing it out on the floor,” said Park Rapids head coach Matt Brandt. “The kids have worked hard and set good goals that they are determined to meet. I don’t feel we have played our best game yet and we will continue to improve.”

Panthers rout Warriors in opener

     It didn’t look like Tyler McCollum was making his season debut against Warroad.

     McCollum, who missed the first eight games of the season recovering from a broken collarbone, hit three 3-pointers and scored 17 points as the Panthers jumped out to a 55-12 lead at the half.

     Jordan McCollum hit two 3-pointers and added 14 points while Rilee Johnson hit four consecutive inside shots late in the half and scored 12 points as the Panthers took control.

     Tyler McCollum finished with 24 points and five steals while Jordan McCollum added 16 points for the Panthers. Zach Jewison had 11 rebounds, Bryce Brovitch had 10 rebounds and Riley Massie had four assists.

     Kobe Ratsavongsy-Sivixay scored 11 points to lead the Warriors, who fell to 1-8 on the season.

Panthers capture tourney title

     Another dominating first half led the Panthers past Frazee in the championship game.

     Layups by Wyatt Derman and Johnson, jumpers by Jordan McCollum and Jewison, and a  basket off a rebound by Jewison gave Park Rapids a 12-2 lead with 12:20 to play in the first half.

     Three straight 3-pointers by Jordan McCollum and a layup by Johnson pushed the lead to 23-4 at the 8:43 mark before a basket off a rebound by Derek Porozinski, jumpers by Brovitch and Johnson, and a three-point play by Johnson made it 32-7 with 3:39 remaining before the break. Frazee closed out the half with a 12-4 run as the Panthers led 36-19 at the intermission.

     Two free throws apiece by Porozinski, Derman and Johnson, a layup by Jordan McCollum, and a layup and 3-pointer by Tyler McCollum extended the lead to 49-22 with 12:55 to play.

     The Hornets responded with a 16-4 run to cut the gap to 53-38 with 6:29 remaining, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Derman pushed the margin to 59-38 with 4:30 to go. A jumper by Jordan McCollum and two baskets off rebounds by Brovitch sealed the win.

     Jordan McCollum’s 15 points and three assists, Johnson’s 11 points and Derman’s 10 points led a balanced offensive attack for the Panthers. Jewison added 10 rebounds and three steals.

     Brady Bellefueille (14), Cory Wokasch (12) and Austin Torma (11) hit double figures for the Hornets, who fell to 3-5 on the season.
