Panthers rout WHA, fall to EGF
Sam Coborn scored five goals and Dan Ricke added a hat trick as the Park Rapids-Menahga boys hockey team opened the season with a 17-1 rout of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Friday night at Walker.
Tucker Coborn, Kyle Kanten, Levi Erickson and Ian Johnson scored two goals apiece while nine players tallied assists as the Panthers held a 48-11 advantage in shots.
The 17 goals in a game just missed tying the school record set in an 18-2 win over Pequot Lakes in 2000.
The Panthers claimed a 6-1 lead after the first period as Sam Coborn tallied a hat trick with three power-play goals and Kevin McMorrow tallied three assists.
Kanten opened the scoring with a power-play goal 2:47 into the game on assists from Jared Naeve and Frank Moren. Sam Coborn scored his first power-play goal on assists from Tucker Coborn and McMorrow at the 4:08 mark.
Ricke made it 3-0 at the 9:21 mark on assists from Tucker Coborn and Kanten before Sam Coborn scored two more power-play goals on assists from McMorrow at the 10:44 and 11:18 marks. Naeve assisted on Coborn's third goal.
Tucker Coborn's goal at the 14:51 mark gave the Panthers a 6-0 lead.
The Panthers scored seven more goals in the second period.
Sam Coborn opened the period with a power-play goal at the 4:00 mark and followed with a shorthanded goal at the 5:17 mark. Erickson assisted on both goals. Moren and Naeve also had assists as the Panthers extended their lead to 8-1.
Erickson scored his first goal at the 9:38 mark and Johnson tallied his first goal at the 12:06 mark for a 10-1 lead. Sam Coborn assisted on both of those goals.
Tucker Coborn scored at the 12:45 mark and assisted on goals by Ricke at the 13:26 mark and Johnson at the 14:31 mark to give Park Rapids a 13-1 advantage. Ricke and Kanten assisted on Tucker Coborn's goal, Kanten had an assist on Ricke's goal and Sam Coborn tallied an assist on Johnson's power-play goal.
Four different Panthers scored in the third period to cap off the scoring.
Steve Smith set up Erickson 30 seconds into the final period, Ricke assisted on Kanten's goal at the 4:10 mark, Kanten set up Ricke at the 10:55 mark and Moren scored at the 12:40 mark.
Goalie Mark Bravo stopped 10 of the 11 shots he faced. Sam Coborn finished with five goals and three assists while Tucker Coborn and Kanten had two goals and four assists each. Ricke had two assists to go along with his hat trick.
Panthers fall to Green Wave
Zack Lawdermilt, Jake Useldinger and Cory Mack scored two goals apiece in leading East Grand Forks to an 8-3 win over the Panthers Saturday afternoon at East Grand Forks.
Goals by Lawdermilt and Mack gave the Green Wave a 2-0 lead after the first period.
Useldinger scored twice at the start of the second period as EGF built a 6-0 advantage. Goals by Mack and Lawdermilt in the third period sealed the win.
Sam Coborn's goal at the 8:15 mark of the second period and two goals by Tucker Coborn in the third period accounted for Park Rapids' three goals. Ben Sitz had an assist on Tucker Coborn's first goal.
Mark O'Mara made 23 saves over the first two periods while Bravo tallied 11 saves in the third period for the Panthers. Beau Scheving had 25 saves for EGF, which improved to 1-3 on the season.
