A dominating performance over New York Mills Monday advanced the Park Rapids girls tennis team to the Section 8A semifinals.

The No. 2-seeded Panthers opened the section tournament with a 7-0 quarterfinal win over the No. 7-seeded Eagles at the Grand Forks Tennis Center. The win advanced Park Rapids to a semifinal match against No. 3 Crookston Friday at Grand Forks. No. 1 Roseau and No. 5 East Grand Forks met in the other semifinal with the winners playing for the section title Friday afternoon at Grand Forks. The Panthers carried a 13-4 record into the semifinals.


Park Rapids, which defeated New York Mills 7-0 during the regular season, dropped only 13 games in the seven matches Monday.

In singles, Bailey LaCoursiere, Julia Renner, Lydia Schaum and Heidi Schaum coasted to straight-set wins.

In doubles, the Alyssa Carlson/Christina Smith, Karly Dickinson/Allie Girtz, and Bonnie Baumgartner/Lexi Burlingame duos also coasted to straight-set victories.

In Monday's other quarterfinal matches at Grand Forks, No. 1 Roseau blanked No. 8 Perham 7-0, No. 5 East Grand Forks topped No. 4 Thief River Falls 4-3, and No. 3 Crookston defeated No. 6 Wadena-Deer Creek 6-1.

The individual section tournament concludes today (Saturday) at Grand Forks with quarterfinal, semifinal and championship matches. The section team champion and the champion and runner-up in both singles and doubles qualify for the state Class A tournament. The state team tournament will be held Oct. 26-27 and the individual tournament will be held Oct. 28-29 at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

No. 4 singles: Heidi Schaum, PR, over Abby Salo 6-1, 6-1.

No. 1 doubles: Alyssa Carlson/Christina Smith, PR, over Lauren Bach/Missy Hendrickx 6-1, 6-2.

No. 2 doubles: Karly Dickinson/Allie Girtz, PR, over Jennifer Maki/Krista Guldseth 6-1, 6-3.

No. 3 doubles: Bonnie Baumgartner/Lexi Burlingame, PR, over Jordin Roberts/Megan Dow 6-0, 6-0.
