Panthers rebound, earn split with Wolverines
Committing nine errors and issuing 12 walks led to 11 unearned runs, but the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team still managed to split a Mid-State Conference doubleheader at Wadena Friday night.
W-DC took advantage of six errors and seven walks to win the opener 9-6 before the Panthers capitalized on five errors and six walks to earn the split with a 7-6 win in the second game.
In the first game, Erika Jerger was hit by a pitch and scored on Lauren Naeve's double to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Park Rapids trailed 9-1 before mounting a rally in the seventh as a single by Caitlan Isaacson, a two-run double by Lexi Burlingame, two errors and two walks led to five runs. But that late comeback fell short.
The Panthers took advantage of W-DC mistakes to build an early lead before holding on to win the second game.
In the first inning, singles by Nakkita Buckanaga, Naeve and Katie Just combined with three walks and an error to produce a quick 4-0 lead before two walks, an error and singles by Olivia Vaadeland, Burl-ingame and Shania Johnson pushed the lead to 6-0 in the second.
W-DC followed by scoring five times in the bottom of the second behind doubles by Sam Killian and Lehmkuhl and two errors.
Doubles by Burlingame and Johnson produced the game-winning run in the fourth. W-DC scored the final run on an error in the fifth.
The split left Park Rapids with a 3-3 record in the conference and a 6-3 overall record while W-DC is 2-4 in conference play and 3-4 overall.
