Panthers rebound from conference losses to Cardinals to sweep Perham

     Hope Johnson’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning capped a Mid-State Conference sweep for the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team Friday.

     After dropping a conference doubleheader at Staples-Motley last Tuesday by scores of 3-0 and 19-5 in five innings, the Panthers rebounded to rout Bagley 29-5 in five innings on Thursday. Park Rapids then swept Perham Friday by following a 15-1 win in five innings with a 5-4 win in eight innings.

     The Panthers improved to 7-5 in conference play and 11-6 overall.

Cardinals sweep Panthers

     Megan Vetsch and Kelli Klein pitched Staples-Motley past the Panthers.

     Vetsch hit a two-run homer and struck out 13 in a four-hit shutout as the Cardinals won the opener.

     Nikki Eischens broke up Vetsch’s no-hitter with a single in the fifth inning. Shania Johnson singled in the sixth while Sarena Kinkel and Eischens had singles in the seventh for the Panthers’ only hits.

     In the second game, nine Park Rapids errors led to 17 unearned runs as the Cardinals completed the sweep.

     Three errors and Shania Johnson’s RBI single led to four runs in the first while Morgan Dean’s RBI single in the second gave the Panthers a 5-3 lead.

     Two errors led to five Staples-Motley runs in the third while six errors helped the Cardinals score 11 runs in the fifth.

     Klein allowed two hits and no earned runs as the Cardinals improved to 6-0 in the conference and 8-2 overall.

Panthers rout Bagley

     A 20-hit attack sparked the Panthers past Bagley.

     Brooke Jerger’s three-run home run and Hope Johnson’s RBI single led to five runs in the first before the Panthers sent 21 batters to the plate and scored 16 runs in the second. Triples by Charity Ridlon, Shania Johnson, Bailee Jerger and Lauren Naeve, a two-run double by Bailee Jerger, and RBI singles by Brooke Jerger, Sydney Bynum and Naeve sparked that inning.

     Naeve’s RBI double led to a run in the fourth while RBI singles by Naeve, Shania Johnson and Bailee Jerger led to the final five runs in the fifth.

     Eischens went 3 for 6 with four runs, Brooke Jerger went 2 for 5 with three runs and four RBI, Naeve went 4 for 5 with three runs and four RBI, Bailee Jerger went 5 for 6 with four RBI, Shania Johnson went 2 for 3 with four runs, and Jessie O’Hern and Hope Johnson scored three runs each to lead the Panthers’ offense.

     Bailee Jerger allowed no earned runs and struck out four in three innings for the win.

Panthers sweep Perham

     The Panthers belted out 22 hits to sweep Perham.

     In the first game, an 11-run fourth inning sparked the win.

     Shania Johnson’s RBI single tied the game at 1-1 in the first before Ridlon’s two-run triple with two outs sparked a three-run third inning as the Panthers led 4-0.

     With two outs in the fourth, a bases-clearing triple by Eischens, an RBI triple by Hope Johnson, an RBI single by O’Hern and a two-run single by Brooke Jerger pushed the lead to 15-1.

     Naeve, Brooke Jerger, Shania Johnson and Bailee Jerger all went 2 for 4 and combined to score eight runs while Ridlon and Eischens had three RBI each as the Panthers finished with 13 hits.

     Bailee Jerger didn’t allow an earned run and struck out six for the win.

     In the second game, Bailee Jerger again allowed no earned runs and struck out nine for the win.

     Naeve scored on a grounder in the third to tie the game at 1-1 before Ridlon’s double, Hope Johnson’s triple and singles by Kinkel and Brooke Jerger gave Park Rapids a 4-1 lead in the fourth.

     After Perham tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth, Hope Johnson’s single scored Eischens with the game-winning run in the eighth.

     Brooke Jerger, Ridlon and Hope Johnson all had two hits to lead the Panthers’ nine-hit attack.
