Panthers rally to defeat Road Crew, fall to Cardinals in triangular meet

Park Rapids won the final three matches to rally for a 37-26 win over Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus to split a pair of Mid-State Conference wrestling matches Thursday night at the Century School gym.

Staples-Motley won seven of the first nine matches to spark a 46-19 victory over the Panthers in the final match. S-M defeated PLPRB 51-21 in the second match.

In the win over the Road Crew, Ben Baumgartner's first-period pin at 112 pounds and Luke Hartig's 9-5 minor decision at 125 tied the match at 9-9. Hartig used a takedown and two nearfalls in the first period and a takedown in the second period to build a 9-0 lead before holding on for the win.

PLPRB won the next two matches to claim a 17-9 lead before Adam Branstrom's first-period pin at 140, Zach Steffen's 11-2 major decision at 145 and Forrest Drury's 3-2 minor decision at 160 gave the Panthers a 22-21 lead. Steffen used a first-period takedown, a reversal and nearfall in the second period, and a takedown and reversal in the third period to spark his win while Drury prevailed with a takedown in the first period and an escape in the third period.

Danny Pike's forfeit win at 189, Brandon Ritter's 6-0 minor decision at 215 and Cole Tretbar's first-period pin at heavyweight rallied the Panthers. After two scoreless periods, Ritter used an escape, takedown and nearfall in the third period to give the Panthers a 31-26 lead before Tretbar's pin sealed the win.

Staples-Motley jumped out to a 36-12 lead en route to defeating the Panthers.

Baumgartner's forfeit win at 112 and Branstrom's second-period pin were the two victories for Park Rapids in the first nine matches.

Drury used takedowns in the first and third periods for a 4-1 minor decision at 160 and Ritter used a takedown and nearfall in the first period, a reversal in the second period, and an escape and takedown in the third period for a 10-2 major decision at 215 for the Panthers' other two wins.

The split gave the Panthers a 5-6 record in dual meets.
