Sophomores Paige Fritze, Kayla Andersen and Tea Nyland and junior Lauren Rossman opened Saturday’s meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay in 1:54.83. Senior Ellen Hoffman returned to state after placing fourth in diving with 367.25 points. Nyland followed with a runner-up 1:00.64 in the 100 butterfly to secure a state berth. Nyland broke Kyja Penning’s school record of 1:01.20 set in 2009 and broke Bemidji’s pool record with a 59.36 during Friday’s preliminaries. Andersen claimed the other state berth with a runner-up 1:12.51 in the 100 breaststroke.

Those efforts led the Panthers to runner-up honors in the team standings with 327 points. Bemidji repeated as section champs with 438 points.

“We rocked on prelims,” said Park Rapids head coach Todd Fritze. “We had a great day Friday. We had 100 percent season bests and all but four lifetime bests. The girls were pretty tense on Saturday, but the majority of them had good swims. I can’t complain.”

Hoffman will begin state preliminaries in diving Monday while the state preliminaries in the swimming events will be held Tuesday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

“It’s quite an accomplishment just making it down there,” said Fritze. “Our goal is to maintain or go a little faster. I’m excited for the girls.”
