Panthers pin Rangers, Wolves; improve to 7-8 in dual meets

Ben Baumgartner, Laine Jensen and Kenny Weaver had two pins each as the Park Rapids wrestling team defeated Crosby-Ironton and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley/Nevis in a triangular meet Thursday night at the Century School gym.

The Panthers used five pins and three forfeits to defeat Crosby-Ironton 51-23 in the first match and used six pins and two forfeits to defeat WHAN 55-19 in the second match. C-I defeated WHAN 42-33 in the other match.

The Panthers carried a 7-8 record in dual meets into Tuesday night's Section 8A match against Crookston. Park Rapids travels to Roseau Friday and will wrestle at Thief River Falls Saturday.

Panthers defeat Rangers

Park Rapids won nine matches in defeating the Rangers in a Mid-State Conference bout.

Jensen and Baumgartner opened the dual with pins. Jensen held a 12-1 lead before recording his pin at the 4:36 mark of the 103-pound match while Baumgartner held a 9-0 lead before recording a pin at the 5:16 mark at 112.

Zach Tretbar (at 125) and Adam Branstrom (at 135) received forfeits to give the Panthers a 24-10 advantage.

Zac Haugland used a pair of reversals in the first two periods for a 4-4 tie at 140 before a takedown and nearfall in the third period led to an 8-4 decision. Zach Steffen followed with a pin to give Park Rapids a 33-10 lead. Steffen trailed 2-0 before a reversal set up his pin at the 3:44 mark in the 145-pound match.

Park Rapids sealed the win by winning three of the final four matches.

Jared Nash, who is rated No. 8 at 171 in this week's state Class A rankings, jumped out to a 10-1 lead before recording a pin at the 3:26 mark at 171. After John Drury received a forfeit win at 189, Weaver ended the match with a pin at the 3:05 mark of the heavyweight match. Weaver held a 4-0 lead after the first period before a reversal set up his pin.

Crosby-Ironton's Hayden Zillmer is rated No. 1 at 112 and David Booth is ranked No. 10 at 152 in the Class A rankings.

Panthers defeat Wolves

The Panthers used a similar formula to defeat the Wolves.

Baumgartner and Jensen opened the match with pins as Baumgartner needed only 36 seconds for the fall at 103 while Jensen recorded his pin in 1:43 at 112.

Mike Sandretzky followed with a 10-2 major decision at 119 to give the Panthers a 16-0 lead. A takedown and nearfall in the first period, a reversal in the second period and a nearfall in the third period gave Sandretzky the win.

Luke Hartig and Branstrom followed with wins to push the Panthers' lead to 25-6. Hartig recorded a pin in 2:38 at 130 and Branstrom used a takedown and two nearfalls in the first period to spark an 8-2 win at 135.

Wins by Devin Wicks and Collin Huckbody pulled the Wolves to within 25-13 before four straight victories by the Panthers sealed the win.

Kevin Just overcame a 15-1 deficit after the first period with a pin at the 3:37 mark at 152 and Danny Pike recorded a pin in 28 seconds at 160 to give Park Rapids a 37-13 edge.

After Nash and Drury received forfeits, Weaver ended the match with a pin in 27 seconds in the heavyweight match. Garrett Edelman had a pin at 215 for the Wolves.
