Panthers pick up key wins

     Jordan McCollum had a pair of double-doubles in leading the Park Rapids boys basketball team to a pair of key wins.

     McCollum had career highs of 30 points and 10 assists in leading the Panthers to a 98-86 Mid-State Conference win over Staples-Motley Thursday night at the Area High School gym and followed with 29 points and a career-high 12 rebounds in a 66-48 win at Bagley Saturday night.

     The Panthers improved to 3-1 on the season.

Panthers outrun Cardinals

     Rilee Johnson also recorded a double-double as the Panthers ran past Staples-Motley.

     Johnson added 22 points and 14 rebounds as the Panthers scored their most points in a game since defeating Pine River-Backus 100-41 in 2007.

     McCollum hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 points as the Panthers carried a 42-36 lead into the half.

     Johnson scored 15 points and Derek Porozinski scored 13 of his career-high 17 points in the second half as the Panthers maintained the lead. Bryce Brovitch’s breakaway dunk before the buzzer put the finishing touches on the win.

     Wyatt Derman also hit double figures with 16 points and joined McCollum with eight rebounds. Johnson and Riley Massie had three steals apiece as the Panthers shot 66 percent from the field (32 for 48) and 78 percent at the free throw line (30 for 38).

     Seth Auger led the Cardinals with 25 points while Colton Borders (17), Tyler Holub (13) and John Lund (10) also hit double figures.

Panthers defeat Flyers

     McCollum scored 17 of his game-high 29 points in the first half and Johnson scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half to spark the Panthers past Bagley.

     Derman led the Panthers with eight steals and four assists while Zach Jewison pulled down eight rebounds for the Panthers, who led 33-24 at the  half.

     Jack Laudon scored 14 points to lead the Flyers, who fell to 0-4 on the season.
