Panthers outslug Braves
Shania Johnson drove in five runs with a pair of triples to spark a 16-hit attack as the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team outslugged Menahga for a 13-10 victory Thursday at the Area High School field.
Menahga jumped out to a 3-0 lead as Joy Haataja singled and scored in the first before a single by Samantha Acuff, an error, a sacrifice fly by Bradi Carlson and an RBI single by Beth Tormanen led to two runs in the second.
Park Rapids tied the game by scoring once in the second and twice in the third. Two-out singles by Nakkita Buckanaga, Ashley Thelen and Caitlan Isaacson produced the run in the second while two errors and Johnson's two-run triple tied the game in the third.
The Braves sent10 batters to the plate and scored four times in the fourth as a single by Carlson, an RBI double by Haataja, an RBI single by Morgan Clements and an RBI double by Jenny Skoog gave Menahga a 7-3 lead.
The Panthers countered by scoring five times in the bottom of that inning as singles by Katelyn Hilmanowski, Lauren Naeve, Lexi Burlingame and Olivia Vaadeland and Johnson's bases-clearing triple gave Park Rapids an 8-7 edge.
In the sixth, two errors and an RBI single by Maria Tormanen gave the Braves a 10-8 lead before Park Rapids used a single by Burlingame, a double by Vaadeland, an error, RBI singles by Buckanaga and Thelen, a two-run single by Erika Jerger and an RBI single by Naeve to claim a 13-10 lead in the sixth.
Naeve, Burlingame, Vaadeland, Johnson, Buckanaga, Thelen and Isaacson all had two hits to lead the Panthers. Vaadeland picked up the win, allowing only three earned runs on eight hits.
Acuff and Haataja both had three hits for Menahga. Hotakainen took the loss in relief.
Sebeka edges Panthers
Brett Brockpahler allowed only two hits in leading Sebeka to a 5-4 win over the Panthers in the regular-season finale Friday.
The Panthers scored four times in the first. Johnson walked and Naeve was hit by a pitch to open the inning. After an error, Park Rapids scored its first run on Vaadeland's grounder. Jerger singled to load the bases, before walks to Buckanaga and Thelen forced in two runs. Isaacson's grounder gave Park Rapids a quick 4-0 lead.
Brockpahler allowed only three more baserunners the rest of the game on an error in the third, a walk to Vaadeland in the sixth and a single by Isaacson in the seventh.
The loss to Sebeka, which improved to 16-4 on the season, dropped the Panthers into the No. 5 spot in the South half for the Section 8AA playoffs. Park Rapids played at No. 4 Hawley Tuesday in a first-round game.
