Panthers oust EGF, advance to semifinals
Winning two close doubles matches led the Park Rapids girls tennis team to a 5-2 win over East Grand Forks in a Section 8A quarterfinal match Tuesday at Grand Forks.
Julia Renner, Julia Smith and Charity Ridlon posted straight-set wins in singles to give the Panthers a 3-2 advantage.
Hope Johnson and Sarena Kinkel overcame a 5-0 deficit in the second set to prevail in three sets at No. 1 doubles while Heidi Schaum and Lindsey Girtz prevailed in three sets at No. 2 doubles.
No. 8 Perham eliminated No. 9 New York Mills 5-2 on Monday. In Tuesday's other quarterfinal matches, No. 1 Staples-Motley blanked Perham 7-0, No. 3 Crookston defeated No. 6 Roseau 6-1, and No. 2 Pequot Lakes eliminated No. 7 Wadena-Deer Creek 6-1.
The Panthers, who defeated East Grand Forks 6-1 during the regular season, carried a 13-5 record into Friday's semifinal match against Staples-Motley.
