Panthers net one goal in tie, loss against section foes
The Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team managed only one goal and 24 shots in two games against Section 8A opponents.
Park Rapids followed a 1-1 tie against Crookston last Friday with an 8-0 loss to Thief River Falls last Saturday in two games at Thief River Falls. The Panthers’ game at Fargo North Tuesday was postponed because of the weather.
The Panthers are now 2-5-1 on the season.
Panthers, Pirates settle for tie
The Panthers and Crookston were expected to battle for the No. 4 seed for the Section 8A playoffs.
The first meeting between these two rivals this season didn’t give either team an advantage.
Julia Renner and Tayah Otterness assisted on a goal by Mady Vaudrin that gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead at the 8:33 mark of the first period.
Lizzy Awender scored at the 13:20 mark as the game was tied after the first period.
Park Rapids goalie Shania Johnson and Crookston goalie Lexie Cormican didn’t allow another goal the rest of the game.
Johnson finished with 35 saves while Cormican made 14 saves to give Crookston, which is rated No. 20 in the latest state Class A poll, a 1-2-1 record.

Prowlers shut out Panthers
For the second time this season, Thief River Falls shut out the Panthers.
The Prowlers, who are rated No. 3 in this week’s state Class A poll, used goals by Kora Torkelson and Emily Bergland to take a 2-0 lead after the first period. TRF held a 22-3 advantage in shots in the opening period.
TRF used a 33-4 advantage in shots to extend the lead after the second period. Short-handed goals by Brandi Malwitz and Morgan Martell and goals by Callie Fagerstrom and Ava Marolt gave the Prowlers a 6-0 advantage.
Bergland and Malwitz concluded the scoring in the third period as the Prowlers used an 18-2 advantage in shots to finish with a 73-9 advantage.
Johnson finished with 65 saves. The Prowlers improved to 7-0 with their fifth shutout.
