Panthers miss out on advancing to finals at state girls swimming meet

Panthers miss out on advancing to finals at state girls swimming meet

  Three of Park Rapids’ four entries in the state Class A girls swimming and diving meet just missed advancing to the finals.

     During Monday’s diving preliminaries at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center, senior Ellen Hoffman finished 28th in the 32-diver field with 111.45 points. Northfield’s Bailey DuPay had the top score of 178.55 points after five dives while Grand Rapids’ Amanda Hernesman claimed the final spot in the semifinals with 122.40 points.

     DuPay won the state title with 397.55 points while Bemidji’s Kylei Grosfield took second with 351.15 points. Detroit Lakes’ Kyley Foster was ninth with 283.60 points and Detroit Lakes’ Emma Disse took 11th with 275.20 points.

     Hoffman finished 28th with 113.80 points in 2011 and 24th with 122.30 points last season.

     During Tuesday’s preliminaries of the swimming events, the Panthers were three spots away from advancing to the consolation finals in all three events.

     Sophomore Paige Fritze, sophomore Kayla Andersen, sophomore Tea Nyland and junior Lauren Rossman clocked a 1:56.15 to finish 19th in the 200-yard medley relay. Fritze opened with a 31.34 in the backstroke, Andersen clocked a 32.23 in the breaststroke, Nyland went 27.06 in the butterfly and Rossman finished in 25.52 in the freestyle. That group clocked a winning time of 1:54.83 at the Section 8A meet and was the No. 18 seed out of 24 qualifiers.

     Visitation broke the state Class A record with a winning time of 1:45.61 Tuesday while Monticello claimed the final spot in the consolation finals with a 1:53.42. Perham finished 23rd in 2:00.55. Visitation won the state title with a 1:46.18 on Wednesday.

     In the preliminaries of the 100 butterfly, Nyland finished 18th with a time of 1:01.57. Nyland broke the school record with a 59.36 during preliminaries at the section meet and qualified for state with a runner-up 1:00.64. Nyland was the No. 16 seed out of 27 qualifiers.

     Mankato West’s Danielle Nack had the top preliminary time of 56.55 while Sartell’s Paige Pawlenty went 1:01.25 to claim the final spot in the consolation finals. Nack won the state title in 53.41 while Fergus Falls’ Abby Fisher finished 13th in 1:00.35.

     Andersen was .16 away from advancing to Wednesday’s finals with a 17th-place time of 1:09.99 in Tuesday’s preliminaries of the 100 breaststroke. Fergus Falls’ Emilie Reard was 19th in 1:10.36. Andersen qualified for state with a runner-up 1:12.51 at the section meet. Andersen was the No. 27 seed out of 27 qualifiers.

     Albert Lea’s Lindsey Horejsi led the field on Tuesday with a winning time of 1:00.24 while teammate Ahnika Jensen clocked a 1:09.83 for the final spot in the consolation finals. Horejsi won the state title in 1:00.67.
