Panthers miss opportunity to move up in 8A standings with 4-1 loss to Crookston
The Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team missed an opportunity to move up in the Section 8A standings with a 4-1 loss at Crookston Thursday night.
The Panthers followed with a 2-2 tie against Lake of the Woods Friday night at Walker for a 4-5-1 record against section opponents and a 9-6-3 overall record.
Klatt leads Pirates past Panthers
Crookston used two goals by Dylan Klatt and a 46-15 advantage in shots to defeat the Panthers for the second time this season.
Ryan Bittner's power-play goal at the 15:04 mark gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead after the first period. Crookston outshot the Panthers 15-2 in the opening period.
The Panthers tied the game when Frank Moren assisted on a goal by Noah MacPherson 34 seconds into the second period.
Klatt scored less than a minute after Park Rapids tied the game and followed with another goal two minutes later to give the Pirates a 3-1 lead. Crookston had a 20-9 edge in shots in that period.
Brady Heppner's goal at the 9:37 mark of the third period sealed the win as the Pirates finished with a 15-5 edge in shots.
Goalie Cody Brumbaugh finished with 46 saves for the Panthers.
The win lifted Crookston to 5-5 against section opponents and 9-10 overall. The Pirates defeated Park Rapids 6-3 earlier in the season.

Panthers, LOW settle for 2-2 tie
Despite holding a 36-26 edge in shots for the game, including an 8-4 advantage in overtime, the Panthers had to settle for a tie with LOW.
After a scoreless first period, Kiefer Miller gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead before Carter Chorney scored to tie the game.
Miller set up Moren for the go-ahead goal in the third period before LOW forced overtime on Victor Dahl's goal.
Brumbaugh finished with 24 saves for the Panthers, who edged LOW 2-1 earlier this season. LOW fell to 5-4-1 in section play and 6-10-2 overall.
