Panthers make impressive comebacks in win over Sebeka, loss to Roseau

Despite overcoming two double-digit halftime deficits, the Park Rapids girls basketball team had to settle for only one win.

The Panthers overcame a 43-33 deficit at the half Thursday night for a 66-62 win at Sebeka and took a 45-43 lead after trailing 37-19 at the half against Roseau Saturday afternoon at the Century School gym. But Roseau responded with a 23-5 run for a 70-53 victory.

The split left Park Rapids with a 2-7 overall record.

Panthers shock Sebeka

The Panthers used a 33-19 run in the second half to rally from a 10-point halftime deficit to upset Sebeka.

Charity Ridlon and Gabie Johnson hit four field goals apiece in the second half to spark the comeback. Katie Klein added two jumpers and Morgan Olson hit a 3-pointer for the Panthers.

Ridlon led a balanced attack for the Panthers with 16 points, six steals and six rebounds. Klein and Johnson added 15 points each while Megan Grimes hauled down 18 rebounds and had six steals. The Panthers finished the game with 17 steals and only 14 turnovers.

Katianne Brockpahler (18) and Brett Brockpahler (17) combined for 35 points as Sebeka fell to 6-4.

"It was an awesome game. The girls finally believed they could do it and came back for the win when we were down at halftime by 10," said Park Rapids head coach Tina Ridlon. "All the girls played well and they played as a team. It was a tremendous victory and a huge boost for team morale and believing in their abilities. It was pretty sweet."

Rams finish strong to pull off win

After seeing a 19-point lead vanish, the Rams rebounded with a strong finish to defeat the Panthers.

Roseau jumped out to a 20-8 lead and took advantage of Park Rapids fouls as seven free throws expanded the margin to 31-12. Bethany Erickson's 3-pointer at the buzzer gave the Rams a 37-19 lead at the half. Grimes' four field goals led the Panthers.

Park Rapids opened the second half with a 26-6 run to take the lead. Layups by Grimes and Ridlon were followed by a 3-pointer by the Rams' Alexis Melby as Roseau held a 40-23 lead with 15:53 to play. An 18-1 run followed as baskets by Johnson, Tori Lauderbaugh, Ridlon and Grimes cut the deficit to 40-32 with 11:26 remaining. Inside baskets by Bria Wolff, Lauderbaugh and Grimes and a three-point play by Klein tied the game at 41-41 with 9:16 to go.

A layup by Wolff and two free throws by Klein at the 8:13 mark gave the Panthers a 45-43 lead, which was their first lead since 1-0.

Roseau responded with a 9-0 run to take the lead for good and used a 14-4 run to build a 66-50 lead with 40 seconds remaining. Cassidy Haggard hit a 3-pointer to make it 66-53 and conclude the scoring for the Panthers.

Grimes had a double-double for the Panthers with 16 points and 19 rebounds. Klein added 14 point while Ridlon had eight rebounds.

Erickson scored a game-high 25 points as Roseau improved to 1-8.
