Panthers make clutch free throws to hold off Perham

Clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch led the Park Rapids girls basketball team to a 44-40 win over Perham Thursday night at the Area High School gym.

The Panthers never trailed in the game, but needed to hit some clutch free throws down the stretch to hold off Perham.

Morgan Olson opened the game by hitting a 3-pointer, Charity Ridlon and Megan Grimes followed with jumpers, Katie Klein hit a 3-pointer, Bria Wolff scored twice inside and Klein hit a jumper as the Panthers jumped out to a 17-7 lead with 5:39 to play in the first half.

A layup by Klein and a basket off a rebound by Wolff kept the Panthers in front 21-11 at the 2:11 mark before Perham rallied.

The Yellowjackets closed out the half with a 6-0 run to cut the gap to 21-17 before opening the second half with a 10-6 run to tie the game at 27-27 with 11:35 to play.

A three-point play by Gabie Johnson with 10:31 remaining gave the Panthers the lead for good.

A layup by Grimes, two free throws by Klein and a layup by Tori Lauderbaugh gave the Panthers a 40-35 lead with 4:29 to play.

Free throws by Hope Johnson and Gabie Johnson made it 42-37 with 48 seconds to play before Ridlon hit two free throws with :02 showing to seal the win.

Klein scored 10 points to lead the Panthers, who improved their overall record to 4-11. Analea Erickson (11) and Miranda Lockhart (10) hit double figures for the Yellowjackets, who fell to 1-15.
