Panthers lose close matches at tourney

Thief River Falls solidified its spot atop the Section 8AA North volleyball standings with a 25-11, 25-8, 25-13 win over Park Rapids Tuesday night at Thief River Falls.

Olivia Vaadeland's 11 digs and five kills led the Panthers. Grace Bateman served three points and had 10 set assists while Megan Grimes had eight digs.

The Prowlers improved to 2-0-1 against section opponents while Park Rapids fell to 1-6.

In the North half of the Section 8AA standings, Thief River Falls leads the way with a 15-1-1 record, followed by Pequot Lakes (14-7), Roseau (11-5-2), East Grand Forks (5-13), Warroad (10-8), Park Rapids (6-13), Crookston (5-12) and Bagley (6-13).

In the South half, Wadena-Deer Creek (15-0) sits atop the standings, followed by Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (10-3), Hawley (12-5-1), Perham (7-12), Breckenridge (11-8), Pelican Rapids (9-9) and Staples-Motley (1-14).

Panthers go 0-4 at Fergus

The Panthers lost some close matches in going 0-4 at last Saturday's Blocktoberfest Tournament at Fergus Falls.

Park Rapids opened with a 25-23, 16-25, 15-12 loss to Crookston, a 25-16, 25-7 loss to Fergus Falls and an 11-25, 25-18, 15-3 loss to Breckenridge before falling to Detroit Lakes 25-20, 25-17 in the seventh-place match.

Justine Rittgers and Erika Jerger served two aces each while Rittgers, Grimes and Vaadeland had five kills each against Crookston. Vaadeland (11), Bateman (10) and Rittgers (10) combined for 31 digs while Bateman (16) and Shania Johnson (9) combined for 25 set assists. Crookston defeated the Panthers in four close sets earlier this season.

Laura Gaustad served eight straight points in Set 1 and 13 consecutive points in Set 2 in leading Fergus Falls past the Panthers. Mady Vaudrin and Johnson served three points each for Park Rapids. Fergus Falls improved to 17-2 on the season.

Bateman's six service points and Jerger's four service points led the Panthers past Breckenridge in Set 1. Katelynn Engebretsen's four service points gave Breckenridge a 19-9 lead in Set 2 before three aces during a 6-0 run by Grimes pulled Park Rapids to within 20-17. Breckenridge closed out Set 2 and used 10 straight service points by Engebretsen to close out the match. Grimes served four aces and eight points, Vaudrin had seven kills and Bateman had eight digs for the Panthers.

Rittgers had three kills and served two aces against Detroit Lakes, which defeated the Panthers for the second time this season to improve to 9-9.

Fergus Falls defeated East Grand Forks (26-28, 25-15, 15-12) in the championship match, Breckenridge defeated Pequot Lakes (25-21, 24-26, 15-7) for third place and Pelican Rapids defeated Crookston (25-19, 22-25, 15-9) for fifth place.
