A good finish wasn't enough to overcome a poor start as the Park Rapids girls swimming and diving team suffered its first dual loss of the season Tuesday night.

The Panthers were disqualified in the 200-yard medley relay and faced a 49-29 deficit after diving before mounting a late rally. That comeback fell short as Bemidji hung on for a 99-87 victory at Bemidji.

Bemidji took first in four of the first five events and won closes races in the 200 freestyle and 50 freestyle to build an early lead. The home team held on by winning close races in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke down the stretch.

After Park Rapids' Jessica Andersen, Hannah Williams, Taylor Graham and Heather Kniss opened with a runner-up 2:09.21 in the 200 medley relay, Emily Creager clocked a winning time of 2:09.61 in the 200 freestyle.

Allycia Zinke (2:28.20) and Mandy Schirmers (2:30.34) went 2-3 in the 200 individual medley, Lauren Rossman took third in the 50 freestyle in 27.80, and Andersen took third in diving with 150.55 points as the Panthers faced a 20-point deficit.

The Panthers began their comeback by winning the next four events.

Zinke won the 100 butterfly in 1:05.22; Creager led the way in the 100 freestyle with a 58.36; Katherine Erickson took first in the 500 freestyle in 5:48.13; and Zinke, Rossman, Leah Meinert and Creager combined for a winning time of 1:48.52 in the 200 freestyle relay. Rossman took third in the 100 freestyle in 1:00.78 and Meinert was third in the 500 freestyle in 6:05.08 as the Panthers trimmed the deficit to 73-67 with three events to go.

Katherine Erickson won the 100 backstroke in 1:05.44 before Schirmers (1:15.04) and Williams (1:18.02) went 2-3 in the 100 breaststroke as the Panthers trailed 91-81.

Bemidji sealed the win by winning the 400 freestyle relay. Katherine Erickson, Williams, Melissa Haas and Creager finished second in 3:58.81 while Rossman, Kniss, Meinert and Schirmers took third in 4:01.68.

"You have to give Bemidji credit for being mentally ready to swim against us," said Park Rapids head coach Todd Fritze, whose team fell to 5-1 in dual meets. "It was a disappointing loss, but the girls regrouped after diving. We still had a chance to tie, but we lost a lot of close races."

The Panthers prevailed in the junior varsity meet by a 99-76 margin. Leading the Panthers with winning times were Elizabeth Nichols in the 100 butterfly (1:14.77); Alyza Edevold in the 100 freestyle (1:08.00); Emily Eystad, Tea Nyland, Carly Waggoner and Sophie Shogren in the 200 freestyle relay (2:16.51); and Seri Erickson, Christina Mackley, Hoffman and Edevold in the 400 freestyle relay (4:30.79). Taking second were Hoffman, Jessie O'Hern, Nichols and Jada Current in the 200 medley relay (2:19.00); Waggoner in the 200 freestyle (2:45.54); Mackley in the 200 individual medley (2:49.30); Kayla Andersen in the 50 freestyle (31.11); Nichols in diving (70.40 points); Nyland in the 100 butterfly (1:30.68); Seri Erickson in the 500 freestyle (6:35.57); and O'Hern in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.20).
