McCollum pitched the Panthers to a 6-0 win in the first game before Detroit Lakes rebounded for a 7-3 victory in the second game.

The split left both teams with 9-3 records in the conference and 14-3 overall records. Staples-Motley also finished 9-3 for a three-way tie for the conference title.

In the opener, McCollum retired the first nine batters en route to a complete-game victory.

The Panthers were also shut out for the first three innings before scoring twice in the fourth when Chris Goplerud and Brad Eischens singled and scored on Cory Gartner’s two-run single.

A four-run seventh inning sealed the win. A double by Josh Severtson, an RBI single by Kyle Goplerud, a sacrifice fly by Chris Goplerud and an RBI single by David Dirks sparked that inning.

Kyle Goplerud went 2 for 4 to lead the Panthers’ nine-hit attack.

Detroit Lakes took advantage of errors to score twice in the first and twice in the third to salvage the split.

The Panthers trailed 5-0 before scoring twice in the fourth on singles by Eischens, John Wiederin and Severtson, a balk and a sacrifice fly by Zach Eystad.

Two-out singles by Dirks and Eischens and an error led to Park Rapids’ other run in the fifth.

Eystad and Eischens both went 2 for 3 as the Panthers again had nine hits. Jordan McCollum started and took the loss, allowing five runs over the first two-plus innings.
