Panthers impressive in season debuts
The Park Rapids girls tennis team opened the season in impressive fashion against some good competition at the Depot Courts.
In the season opener Friday, the Panthers defeated Pine City 5-2 and dropped 5-2 decisions to Aitkin and Mound Westonka during a quadrangular meet. Crookston, Minnewaska Area, Roseau and Thief River Falls also participated in this new tournament.
The Panthers followed by claiming runner-up honors in the eight-team Park Rapids Invitational on Saturday. Thief River Falls topped the field with 28 points while the Panthers used four runner-up finishes to finish second with 22 points.
“I felt the girls played well for only four days of practice,” said Park Rapids head coach Brianne Morris. “The girls really enjoyed the competition, just not the warm weather. I could really see that the girls took time over the summer to improve their skills. There were some close matches that could have gone either way. We learned some things that we need to improve on, but it was a good start to our season.”
Panthers go 1-2 in quadrangular
Hope Johnson won all three of her matches at No. 2 singles to lead the Panthers in their season debut.
In addition to Johnson’s win, the Panthers used a sweep in doubles and a win by Natalie Kinkel at No. 3 doubles to defeat Pine City. Sarena Kinkel and Lindsey Girtz prevailed in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles, Morgan Knott and Mariena Dearstyne won in straight sets at No. 2 doubles, and Drew Hilmanowski and Haley MacPherson prevailed in straight sets at No. 3 doubles.
Johnson prevailed in a third-set tiebreaker and Natalie Kinkel won in straight sets to account for the Panthers’ two victories against Aitkin.
Johnson won a close match while Knott and Dearstyne prevailed in a third-set tiebreaker to lead the Panthers against Mound Westonka. Hilmanowski and MacPherson fell in a third-set tiebreaker.
To speed up play, all matches started with 2-2 scores.
