Panthers host Pequot Lakes in first round of 8AA playoffs

     Sweeping Pequot Lakes during the regular season helped the Park Rapids boys basketball team earn a home game for the Section 8AA tournament.

     Park Rapids received the No. 4 seed in the north and will host No. 5 Pequot Lakes Thursday night at 7. The Panthers defeated Pequot Lakes 69-60 and 79-65 during the regular season.

     The section tournament begins Monday night with No. 8 Badger hosting No. 9 Warroad. The winner of that game plays at No. 1 Crosby-Ironton Thursday night.

     In Thursday night’s other north quarterfinal games, No. 2 East Grand Forks hosts No. 7 Bagley and No. 3 Crookston hosts No. 6 Roseau.

     Bemidji State University will host the north semifinals next Saturday night. The winner between Park Rapids and Pequot Lakes will most likely face Crosby-Ironton at 6 p.m. with the EGF/Bagley and Crookston/Roseau winners playing at 7:45.

     BSU will also host the north championship game on March 4 at 7 p.m. and the Section 8AA championship game on March 7 at 7 p.m.

EGF defeats Panthers

     Jim Warmack’s 16 points and seven blocked shots led East Grand Forks to a 70-45 win over the Panthers Tuesday night.

     Ben Bjornson (13), Grant Frydenlund (12) and Tanner Seim (10) also hit double digits for the Green Wave, who improved to 17-8 on the season.

     Tyler McCollum was the only Park Rapids player in double figures with 15 points. McCollum also led the team with five rebounds while Remington Hagan dished out five assists as the Panthers fell to 14-9 on the season.

Panthers hold off Wolverines

     Jordan McCollum’s 26 points helped the Panthers hold off Wadena-Deer Creek for a 69-68 Mid-State Conference victory last Friday night at Wadena.

     Derek Porozinski added 16 points and eight rebounds while Hagan scored 10 points and had three assists for the Panthers, who led 34-31 at the half. Tyler McCollum had nine rebounds, four steals and three assists, Zach Jewison had eight rebounds and Riley Massie had three assists as Park Rapids improved to 6-4 in the conference despite missing 17 of 34 free throws.

     Jared Reintiz and Dylan Dumpprope scored 22 points apiece for the Wolverines, who fell to 0-10 in the conference and 4-20 overall.
