Panthers host annual invitational, hoping to contend at section meet

If the regular-season finale is any indication, the Park Rapids boys cross-country team has a legitimate shot to qualify for the state Class A meet.

The Panthers had all seven runners finish in the top 47 spots en route to a fourth-place finish at the Park Rapids Invitational at Headwaters Country Club Monday.

Perham, the top-rated Class A team in the state, captured the team title with 17 points. Pelican Rapids was second with 89 points and Detroit Lakes took third with 108 points. Park Rapids followed with 113 points while Roseau was fifth with 167 points in this 20-team meet. Perham should easily defend the Section 8A title while Park Rapids and Roseau should battle it out for the other state berth.

Isaac Overmyer led the Panthers by finishing fourth in 16:20 while Jake Waggoner (20th in 17:42), Zach Jewison (22nd in 17:49), Tanner Otterness (35th in 18:28) and Tanner Eischens (43rd in 18:49) rounded out Park Rapids' team score. Bailey Mueller (45th in 18:52) and Brad Eischens (47th in 18:57) rounded out the Panthers' varsity team.

Perham's Keeghan Hurley led the field in the 5,000-meter race with a winning time of 15:53. Nevis' Zach Miller finished 63rd in 19:57.

Tayah Otterness finished 14th overall with a time of 15:50 to lead the Panthers to sixth place in the 16-team girls meet with 143 points. Perham won the team title with 60 points while Detroit Lakes (102), Warroad (104), Roseau (118) and Pelican Rapids (123) followed.

Megan Olson was 27th in 16:26, Lora Remus finished 36th in 16:52, Abby Mueller was 39th in 16:56 and Madison Steffel finished 45th in 17:33 to complete Park Rapids' team score. Kaylee Hilmanowski (48th in 17:44) and Morgan Olson (53rd in 18:14) rounded out the Panthers' varsity team.

Roseau's Madeline Huglen clocked a winning time of 14:59 over the 4,000-meter course. Nevis fielded an incomplete team with Karly Drury (61st in 18:36), Taylor Drury (64th in 19:06), Chloe Johnson (69th in 19:25) and Mattie Hjelseth (86th in 21:53) competing.

Nathanael Rairdon, Tyler Breitweser, Austin Carlson, Jared Kantonen and Jacob Hays led the Panthers to fourth place in the boys junior varsity race.

In the girls junior varsity race, Rebecca Hays took first in 16:51 and Megan Jewison finished 25th in 20:59 to lead the Panthers.

The Panthers will now train for the Section 8A meet, which be held at Bagley Oct. 26.
