Panthers hold off Rothsay, end slide

One losing streak had to end when Park Rapids and Rothsay met in the third-place game in the Valkyrie Division of the Pelican Rapids girls basketball tournament last Wednesday.

Led by a balanced scoring attack, Park Rapids was able to snap a 32-game losing streak with a 47-37 victory.

The loss extended Rothsay's regular-season losing streak to 19 games. The Tigers, whose previous season high this season was 26 points, entered this game averaging 20.5 points a game. Rothsay is now 2-54 in its last 56 games.

Katie Klein led the Panthers with 11 points and nine rebounds. Megan Grimes (9), Hope Johnson (8) and Charity Ridlon (8) combined for 25 more points with Ridlon leading the Panthers with 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Grimes also grabbed nine rebounds and joined Amber Booge with three steals. Johnson and Booge led Park Rapids with three assists each.

Ridlon hit some clutch free throws down the stretch to preserve the win. The Panthers made 18 of 25 free throws in the game. Park Rapids held a 38-22 edge in rebounds while tallying 12 steals and 21 turnovers. The win lifted the Panthers' record this season to 1-6.

Chelsie Lankow (10), Alexis Craig (9), Lexy Dunbar (8) and Ashley Maack (7) combined to score 34 points to lead Rothsay, which fell to 0-9 this season.

NCE defeats Panthers

The Panthers opened the tournament with a 68-32 loss to Norman County East last Tuesday.

Klein led the Panthers with 10 points while Grimes had five rebounds. Ridlon led Park Rapids with three assists while Grimes had three steals. The Panthers had 27 turnovers in the game while tallying eight steals.

NCE, which defeated Lester Prairie 68-37 in the title game, improved to 6-1 on the season.
