Panthers hold off late rally, defeat Northland

Katie Klein and Charity Ridlon hit two free throws apiece in the final 18 seconds as the Park Rapids girls basketball team held off a late rally by Northland for a 68-64 victory Monday night at the Area High School gym.

The Panthers led 64-52 with 3:51 to play before Northland went on a 10-0 run to slice the gap to 64-62 with 34 seconds left. Klein's two free throws with 18 seconds remaining and Ridlon's two free throws with :03 showing sealed the win.

The Panthers led most of the way in closing out the regular season with a win.

A 3-pointer by Morgan Olson and a jumper by Cassidy Haggard gave the Panthers a 5-4 lead. Olson hit another 3-pointer to tie the game at 8-8 and start a 19-2 run. Gabie Johnson's three inside baskets, a jumper by Ridlon, a layup by Megan Grimes and a basket off a rebound by Bria Wolff gave the Panthers a 24-10 lead with 7:40 to play in the first half.

Three baskets by Abby Burch and a 3-pointer by Kristine Johnson sparked a 14-4 run as the Eagles closed the gap to 28-24 with 2:28 to play in the first half. After jumpers by Wolff and Ridlon gave Park Rapids a 33-26 edge, Chloe Wolske hit a 3-pointer as Northland trailed 33-29 at the break.

Baskets by Kali Wake and Burch pulled the Eagles to within 35-34 with 16:34 to play before a layup by Tori Lauderbaugh, a three-point play by Klein, a pair of layups by Ridlon, and layups by Wolff and Grimes sparked a 15-2 run as the Panthers led 50-36 with 13:13 to go.

A 3-pointer by Ridlon, a layup by Grimes and two inside baskets by Johnson kept the Panthers in front 64-52 with 3:51 remaining.

Burch hit a layup and four free throws as Northland rallied before the four free throws by Klein and Ridlon iced the win.

Ridlon finished with 16 points, Wolff had 13 points and eight rebounds, Johnson had 10 points, Grimes had 13 rebounds and Lauderbaugh pulled down 10 rebounds as the Panthers improved to 7-18.

Burch scored a game-high 30 points and Wolske added 19 points for the Eagles, who fell to 7-17.

Pelican Rapids defeats Panthers

Pelican Rapids had five players score in double figures and all 11 players score points in an 84-45 victory over the Panthers last Saturday at Pelican Rapids.

Lizzie Pfeifle, Mackenzie Korf, Kendra Weinrich and Kassidy Spicer all scored 12 points as the Vikings closed out the regular season with a 17-7 record.

Ridlon had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and added four blocked shots while Lauderbaugh pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Panthers, who trailed 42-19 at the half.
