Panthers hit free throws down stretch to seal win over Patriots

     Jordan McCollum hit 10 free throws down the stretch as the Park Rapids boys basketball team closed Friday night’s Mid-State Conference game against Pequot Lakes with an 18-3 run for a 79-65 victory at the Area High School gym.

     The Panthers led for most of the game before a jumper by Travis Jacobson and a 3-pointer by Jack Kreitz gave Pequot Lakes a 62-61 lead with 5:50 to play.

     McCollum hit eight free throws and Rilee Johnson hit two free throws and converted a three-point play as the Panthers claimed a 74-65 lead with 2:22 remaining. A jumper and two more free throws by McCollum in the final 1:36 sealed the win.

     Pequot Lakes jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead behind 3-pointers by CJ Borleis and Hunter Larson. Three-pointers by Jordan McCollum and Wyatt Derman were followed by back-to-back 3-pointers by Tyler McCollum as the Panthers led 15-12 at the 13:05 mark.

     After Borleis converted a three-point play to tie the game at 15-15 at the 12:50 mark, the Panthers used a 3-pointer by Jordan McCollum, a layup off a steal by Johnson, jumpers by Derman and Johnson, a three-point play off a steal by Johnson, two free throws apiece by Jordan McCollum, Johnson and Bryce Brovitch, and a basket off a rebound by Tyler McCollum to claim a 35-24 lead with 5:52 to play in the first half.

     A three-point play by Remington Hagan and inside baskets by Tyler McCollum, Johnson and Jordan McCollum kept the Panthers in front 47-40 at the half.

     Borleis had three baskets inside as the Patriots opened the second half with an 11-4 run to tie the game at 51-51 with 12:17 to play.

     Two free throws by Jordan McCollum and a 3-pointer by Tyler McCollum gave the Panthers a 56-51 lead with 11:23 to go before Pequot Lakes used layups by Jacobson, Borleis and Kreitz to take a 62-61 lead. The Panthers then hit 14 of 17 free throws down the stretch to pull off the win.

     Jordan McCollum (26), Johnson (25) and Tyler McCollum (18) combined for 69 points to lead the Panthers, who improved to 5-3 in the conference and 12-6 overall.

     CJ Borleis scored 20 points and Jack Kreitz added 18 points for the Patriots, who fell to 2-5 in the conference and 8-11 overall.

Lakers hold on for win

     Detroit Lakes hit three key free throws down the stretch to seal a 66-61 conference win over the Panthers Thursday night at the Area High School gym.

     Ben Hokanson scored 21 points and Corbin Duncan added 11 points for the Lakers, who maintained first place in the conference standings with a 7-1 record. Detroit Lakes is 12-6 overall.

     Johnson’s 17 points and three steals, Jordan McCollum’s 14 points and six assists, Tyler McCollum’s 12 points, and Zach Jewison’s 10 rebounds and three steals led the Panthers.
