Panthers give up late lead, split with TRF
For the third time this season, the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team rebounded from a late-inning loss to earn a split in a doubleheader.
Thief River Falls scored four times in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for a 7-6 win in the first game Tuesday at Thief River Falls.
The Panthers rebounded from that loss to salvage a split with a 6-4 win in the second game.
In the opener, doubles by Ashley Domino and Bailee Jerger gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Thief River Falls carried a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning when the Panthers reclaimed the lead by scoring four times. An RBI single by Lauren Naeve and two-run triple by Erika Jerger gave Park Rapids a 6-3 advantage.
But Thief River Falls rallied for the winning runs in the seventh when a two-out error set up Kelly Fynboh's game-winning RBI double.
Domino went 2 for 4 and Naeve went 2 for 3 to lead the Panthers' eight-hit attack. Bailee Jerger took the loss.
In the second game, the Panthers scored a run in the first on singles by Alyssa Carlson, Grimes and Domino.
Singles by Caitlan Isaacson, Lexi Burlingame and Ashley Thelen set up a two-run single by Grimes as the Panthers tied the game at 3-3 in the second.
Grimes' RBI single in the fourth helped the Panthers tie the game at 4-4 before a single by Carlson, an RBI triple by Domino and an RBI single by Bailee Jerger led to the winning runs in the sixth.
Bailee Jerger retired 17 of final 19 batters to pick up the win. Grimes went 3 for 4 with three RBI while Carlson, Domino, Naeve and Burlingame had two hits apiece as the Panthers improved to 12-5. The split gave Thief River Falls a 6-9 record.
