Panthers finish seventh in first Mid-Minn meet

     The Nevis and United North Central boys golf teams opened Mid-Minnesota Conference play with top-four finishes at Blueberry Pines Friday.

     Gunnar Netteberg finished fourth at the No. 1 player spot with an 87, Jake Jordan was fourth at the No. 2 player spot with an 83, Dan Stacey tied for first at the No. 4 player position with a 90 and AJ Pappas finished second at the No. 5 player position with a 93 to lead Nevis. Michael Babler’s 110 completed the Tigers’ five-player team score of 463 for third place with 30.5 points.

     Gavin Mickelson finished third at the No. 2 player spot with an 82, Don Wurdock was third at the No. 4 player position with a 92, Tom Johnson finished third at the No. 5 player spot with a 99 and Vaughn Massie was first at the No. 6 player position with a 98 as United North Central finished fourth with a 468 and 29 points. Noah Hendrickson’s 97 rounded out the Warriors’ team score.

     Park Rapids carded a 488 and finished seventh with 21.5 points. Leading the Panthers was Bailey Mueller, who carded an 85 to finish second at the No. 3 player position. Completing the Panthers’ team score were Dustin Bethel’s 89, Cody Brumbaugh’s 94, Jackson Leckner’s 108 and Zach Hagen’s 112.

     Pequot Lakes led the field by firing a 435 and scoring 43 points. Andrew Israelson and Dakota Waverek shared medalist honors with 75s in leading Staples-Motley to second place with a 439 team score and 38.5 points.

Team scores: Pequot Lakes (435) 43 points, Staples-Motley (439) 33.5 points, Nevis (463) 30.5 points, United North Central (468) 29 points, Crosby-Ironton (483) 25 points, Wadena-Deer Creek (487) 23 points, Park Rapids (488) 21.5 points, Pine River-Backus (539) 14.5 points.

Cardinals win UNC Invitational

     Friday’s Mid-Minnesota meet also doubled as the United North Central Invitational with Staples-Motley claiming the team title with a four-player score of 326.

     Israelson and Waverek shared medalist honors with 75s as the Cardinals topped the 10-team field. Following Staples-Motley’s 326 were Ottertail Central (334), Pequot Lakes (341), Nevis (353), United North Central (369), Crosby-Ironton (371), Park Rapids (376), Wadena-Deer Creek (377), Bagley (394) and PR-B (413).
