Richards claimed the final state berth on balance beam with a fourth-place 8.90 during the final rotation at the Area High School gym. That gave the Panthers their first state participant since Allie Schluter qualified on uneven parallel bars seven years ago.

That performance also helped the Panthers tally their second-highest team score of the season. Park Rapids-Nevis finished with a 124.90 for fourth place in the five-team field. Perham led the way with 148.50 points to capture its seventh straight section title. Detroit Lakes was second with a 144.425 while Fergus Falls was third with a 125.425. Frazee finished fifth with a 113.425.

The Panthers' best event was vault where Richards' 8.75, Kyja Penning's 8.60, Ellen Hoffman's 8.10 and Emily Klingenberg's 7.95 led to a 33.40. Perham's Kelsi Vomacka led the way with a 9.60.

Richards tied her season best with her state-qualifying 8.90 on beam while Penning's 7.80, Jessi Andersen's season high of 7.75 and Klingenberg's 7.55 resulted in a 32.00. Katherine Erickson added a season high of 7.15. Vomacka also took first on beam with a 9.525.

Penning led the Panthers on bars with an 8.05 while Richards' 7.95, Cassie Baxter's season-best 7.05 and Klingenberg's 6.75 led to a 29.80. Andersen added a season best of 5.65. Vomacka's 9.75 was the top score in that event.

The Panthers added a 29.70 in floor exercise with Penning's 8.35, Richards' 8.15, Kirsten Erickson's 7.20 and Klingenberg's 6.00 comprising the team score. Vomacka again took first with a 9.80.

Vomacka claimed the all-around title with a 38.675. Richards was eighth with a season high of 33.75, Penning placed 10th with a 32.80 and Klingenberg was 12th with a 28.25.

The top-four finishers in each event qualified for the state meet. The team competition will be Thursday and the individual competition will be held Friday at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion.

Perham, the No. 1-rated team in the state with a 148.38 average, will look to capture its sixth consecutive state Class A championship. Detroit Lakes entered the section meet rated No. 7 in the state with a 142.33 average.

"We had a really good meet," said Park Rapids head coach Wendi Hartig, whose team just missed matching its season high of 125.35. "Everyone was confident and very consistent. It was a good way to end the season."

Team scores: Perham 148.50, Detroit Lakes 144.425, Fergus Falls 125.425, Park Rapids-Nevis 124.90, Frazee 113.425.
