Panthers fall in overtime to W-H-A, drop conference game to Lakers

An impressive run to end regulation play went for naught as Walker-Hackensack-Akeley escaped the Area High School gym last Thursday night with a 46-40 overtime victory over the Park Rapids girls basketball team.

W-H-A held a 24-10 lead at the half and still led 34-20 with 11:16 to play before the Panthers rallied. Jumpers by Katie Klein and Megan Grimes and a layup by Klein closed the gap to 34-26 with 10:07 remaining.

Jumpers by Charity Ridlon and Grimes and two free throws by Hope Johnson made it 37-33 at the 6:39 mark.

A layup by Tara Anderson gave the Wolves a 39-33 edge with 6:28 left, but W-H-A would not score again during the rest of regulation time.

The Panthers forced overtime when a jumper by Ridlon with 5:59 to play, a jumper by Tori Lauderbaugh at the 3:31 mark and a layup off a steal by Klein with 50 seconds left capped a 19-5 run and tied the game at 39-39.

W-H-A's defense then held the Panthers without a field goal in the extra session. Sarah Knight scored twice inside as the Wolves led 43-39 with 2:15 to play. Maxine Smith then scored off a missed free throw with 43 seconds remaining to seal the win. Grimes hit a free throw at the 1:50 mark to account for the Panthers' only point in overtime.

Knight, who scored 14 points in the first half, finished with a game-high 26 points as the Wolves improved to 11-9.

Ridlon finished with 11 points, Grimes grabbed 12 rebounds, Klein had six steals and Katelyn Hilmanowski dished out three assists for the Panthers.

Lakers run past Panthers

Detroit Lakes jumped out to a 38-7 halftime lead en route to a 71-12 Mid-State Conference vicory over the Panthers last Friday night.

Courtney Hedstrom hit six 3-pointers and scored 20 points to lead the Lakers. Kayli Muckenhirn added 19 points as Detroit Lakes improved to 6-3 in the conference and 12-10 overall.

Grimes' seven rebounds and Klein's three steals led the Panthers, who fell to 0-9 in conference games.

Northland edges Panthers

Abby Burch scored 30 points in leading Northland to a 63-51 win over the Panthers Tuesday night at Remer.

Klein and Ridlon scored 10 points apiece as the Panthers built a 29-24 lead at the half.

But Burch (20) and Kori Dunham (12) combined for 32 points in the second half to spark Northland to the win. The Eagles, who improved to 8-12 on the season, took advantage of 28 Park Rapids fouls by making 28 of 47 free throws.

Klein (15), Ridlon (14) and Grimes (11) scored in double figures for Park Rapids, which fell to 1-20 on the season. The 51 points marked a season high for the Panthers.
