Panthers excel in home debut
Winning six events helped the Park Rapids girls track and field team open the outdoor season in winning fashion at Tuesday's Park Rapids Invitational at Vern Weekley Field.
The Panthers compiled 133 points to edge Crookston's 129 for the team title. Nevis finished third with 100 points while United North Central was seventh.
In the boys meet, Park Rapids turned in three winning efforts to finish third with 87 points. Detroit Lakes took first with 191 points while Crookston was second with 92.50 points. United North Central finished fourth with 72 points while Nevis was eighth with 14.50 points in this nine-team meet.
Balance lifts Panthers to title
Winning four individual events and two relays led the Panthers to the girls title.
Victoria Lutz won the 800-meter run, Lydia Lutz won the 3,200 run, Rachel Thelen took first in the pole vault and Hannah Wolff led the field in the triple jump to lead the way. The 4 x 800 relay team of Sophie Shogren, Lydia Lutz, Wolff and Victoria Lutz opened the meet with a winning effort while the 4 x 400 relay team of Victoria Lutz, Shelby Pierce, Mandy Schirmers and Wolff ended the meet with a winning performance.
"I was really pleased with how the girls performed. We finished where we should have finished," said Park Rapids head coach Corey Hill. "We had some young talent step up and we had a lot of girls set personal records. I'm very pleased where the girls are at right now."
Megan Stambaugh took first in the 400 dash, Annessa Feder took first in the high jump and Maggie Lindow took first in the long jump to lead Nevis. The 4 x 100 relay team of Micah Richards, Feder, Lindow and Jessica Schunk also took first, as did the 4 x 200 relay team of Feder, Stambaugh, Paige Walters and Riley Hanson.
Timmons, Ondracek lead boys
Cody Timmons took first in the 200 dash and high jump and Devon Ondracek led the field in the discus to lead the Panthers in the boys meet.
"I thought the meet went well," said Park Rapids head coach Patrick Deegan. "We had some individuals do very well and we had some nice surprises in the hurdles, pole vault and shot. We need to iron a few things out in the relays. The nice thing is it is early and we have a lot of time to improve."
Tom Gruchow won the 400 dash and pole vault to lead UNC while Bryon Schuldt took first in the 1,600 run to lead Nevis.
