Panthers edge PR-B, fall to DL in Mid-State battle

     Charity Ridlon scored 11 points down the stretch as the Park Rapids girls basketball team edged Pine River-Backus 48-45 Thursday night at the Area High School gym.

     After a jumper by Ridlon gave the Panthers a 38-34 lead with 6:05 to play, a layup by Megan Felthous and two baskets by Shelby Adkins gave PR-B a 40-38 edge with 3:52 remaining.

     Layups by Felthous and Elizabeth Downie kept the Tigers in front 44-41 with 1:45 to go before a jumper and free throw by Ridlon kept Park Rapids within 45-44 with :51 showing.

     A jumper by Ridlon with 29 seconds to play gave the Panthers a 46-45 lead before a free throw by Ridlon with 14 seconds left and a free throw by Katie Klein at the :09 mark sealed the win.

     PR-B jumped out to a 6-0 lead before a basket off a rebound by Gabie Johnson and a 3-pointer and jumper by Ridlon gave the Panthers a 7-6 lead at the 12:56 mark.

     Felthous responded with a 3-pointer and two jumpers as PR-B led 13-9, but a layup by Ridlon, three inside baskets by Johnson and two jumpers by Bria Wolff gave Park Rapids a 22-18 lead. Klein’s 3-pointer before the buzzer gave the Panthers a 25-22 lead at the half.

     A layup by Megan Grimes, two jumpers by Ridlon and a layup by Klein gave the Panthers a 36-34 lead with 6:56 to play before Ridlon scored 11 of the Panthers’ final 12 points.

     Ridlon finished with 24 points, seven rebounds and three steals while Johnson added 10 points for the Panthers.

     Felthous scored 20 points for the Tigers, who fell to 10-7 on the season.

Nielsen leads Lakers past Panthers

     Shay Nielsen scored 18 of her 24 points in the first half in leading Detroit Lakes to a 73-53 Mid-State Conference win over the Panthers Friday night at Detroit Lakes.

     Kyley Foster added 13 points and Trisa Hutchinson had 12 points for the Lakers, who remained undefeated in conference play. Detroit Lakes improved to 6-0 in the conference and 13-4 overall.

     Ridlon scored 17 of her game-high 26 points in the second half as the Panthers fell to 1-7 in the conference and 7-11 overall. Johnson finished with 10 points while Grimes had 11 rebounds, six steals and five assists.
