Panthers edge Cardinals, run past Warriors

     The Park Rapids boys basketball team rebounded from its worse loss of the season with two impressive wins.

     After suffering an 81-29 loss to Perham, the Panthers regrouped for a 59-57 Mid-State Conference win at Staples-Motley Thursday night and followed with a dominating 92-23 win at Warroad Saturday.

     Those two wins lifted Park Rapids to 4-1 in conference play and 10-4 overall.

Panthers win at Staples

     Wyatt Derman’s 3-pointer and free throws by Tyler McCollum and Zach Jewison down the stretch lifted the Panthers past Staples-Motley and into a tie for first place in the conference standings.

     Despite four baskets by Rilee Johnson and a pair of baskets and a 3-pointer by McCollum, the Panthers trailed 29-23 at the half.

     McCollum’s five field goals, Jewison’s four field goals and Derman’s three field goals in the second half sparked the Panthers to the win.

     Jewison led the Panthers with a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Tyler McCollum finished with 20 points, Derman finished with 13 points and four assists, Johnson had 12 points, and Jordan McCollum had six assists as the Panthers tied Detroit Lakes atop the conference standings.

     Tyler Holub (16), Seth Auger (13) and John Lund (11) hit double figures for the Cardinals, who fell to 2-3 in the conference and 7-8 overall.

     In the junior varsity game, Tristan Breitweser scored 8 points in the final 4.6 seconds to rally the Panthers to a 47-46 victory. Breitweser hit a 3-pointer with 4.6 seconds left and hit two free throws after being fouled on the inbounds play with 4.2 seconds left. After Staples-Motley missed two free throws, Breitweser was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 0.2 seconds remaining and hit all three free throws to give the Panthers the win. Breitweser (14), Remington Hagan (13) and Damion Hanke (10) hit double figures for the Panthers.

Panthers rout Warriors

     For the second time this season, the Panthers coasted to an easy win over Warroad.

     Jordan McCollum (14), Tyler McCollum (12) and Johnson (11) hit double figures in the first half as the Panthers jumped out to a 50-10 lead.

     Derek Porozinski finished with a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan McCollum scored 22 points and had seven assists and five steals while Tyler McCollum added 19 points. Johnson finished with 17 points as 10 different players scored for Park Rapids, which defeated the Warriors 80-24 earlier in the season.

     The win gave the Panthers a 7-4 record against Section 8AA teams while Warroad fell to 0-7 against section opponents and 1-13 overall.
