Panthers drop pair of games to section rivals

Hannah Williams' pair of goals provided the main highlights as the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team dropped a pair of games to Section 8A opponents at Thief River Falls.


Ashley Thelen and Williams scored goals in the Panthers' 8-2 loss to Crookston Friday night while Williams had the only goal in the Panthers' 4-1 loss to Thief River Falls Saturday.

In the loss to Crookston, goals by Brianna Breiland and Shannon Kaiser gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead before Thelen scored at the 12:41 mark. Mandi Persson's power-play goal gave Crookston a 3-1 lead after the first period. The Pirates held a 17-6 edge in shots on goal in the opening period.

Jessica Broekemeier's goal gave Crookston a 4-1 lead before Williams scored at the 15:38 mark as the Panthers trailed 4-2 after the second period. Park Rapids held a 10-9 edge in shots in that period.

Crookston, which was ranked No. 8 in the first state Class A poll, sealed the win by scoring four times in the third period. Breiland, Lizzy Awender, Broekemeier and Amber Trostad tallied goals as the Pirates improved to 2-0. The Pirates held a 15-8 advantage in shots in the final period.

Rachel Biermaier stopped 22 shots for the Pirates while Bailey Moore and Shania Johnson combined for 33 saves for the Panthers.

Thief River Falls held a 46-24 edge in shots in the win over Park Rapids Saturday.

Goals by Jordan Solheim and Emily Bergland gave the Prowlers a 2-0 lead after the first period. TRF held a 17-6 edge in shots in the opening period.

Madison Holen's goal and Bergland's short-handed goal pushed the Prowlers' lead to 4-0. Williams' goal at the 8:30 mark closed the margin to 4-1 after the second period. TRF had a 15-9 edge in shots in that period.

The Prowlers held a 14-9 edge in shots during a scoreless third period.

Moore made 42 saves as the Panthers fell to 1-5 on the season. Kaylee Koop finished with 23 saves as the Prowlers improved to 3-1-1.
