Nevis jumped out to a 21-6 lead en route to a 79-34 win Thursday night while Staples-Motley used runs of 9-0 and 13-0 in the second half to spark a 69-36 Mid-State Conference win Friday night.

The two losses dropped the Panthers to 0-6 in conference play and 1-11 overall.

Tigers take charge early

Logan Gooch and Dylan Stenberg combined for 17 of Nevis' first 21 points to lead the Tigers Thursday night.

Tyler Ridlon's 3-pointer and a basket by Andy Waller led the Panthers, who trailed 21-6 at the 11:13 mark of the first half.

Two layups by Gerald Beckerleg pushed Nevis' lead to 28-9 at the 9:29 mark before two inside baskets by Christian Ridlon and a jumper by Waller kept the Panthers within 30-15 with 7:31 to go in the first half.

A jumper by Shawn Anglin, a layup by Gooch and a 3-pointer by Beckerleg extended the Tigers' lead to 41-15 at the 3:25 mark before layups by Jake Keranen, Robbie Hine and Beckerleg and a basket off a rebound by Anglin gave Nevis a 49-19 cushion at the break. Kyle Goplerud and Tyler Ridlon hit jumpers for the Panthers.

Nevis opened the second half with an 8-0 run as a 3-pointer by Taylor Chase and a layup by Gooch pushed the margin to 57-19 with 13:27 remaining.

Keranen scored off a rebound and Chase hit another 3-pointer to give Nevis a 62-22 edge with 11:35 to play before the Panthers responded with layups by Christian Ridlon and Waller. A 3-pointer by Matt Gustafson at the 7:03 mark gave Nevis a 66-29 edge.

After a 3-pointer by John Massie made it 66-32 with 6:00 remaining, the Tigers ended the game with a 13-2 run behind Keranen's three layups, a layup by Hine, and jumpers by Bryon Schuldt and Gustafson. Cory Gartner's layup was the Panthers' only basket down the stretch.

Keranen (16), Gooch (14), Stenberg (13) and Chase (12) scored in double figures to lead a balanced attack for the Tigers. Gooch grabbed 10 rebounds and had five steals, Keranen had eight rebounds, Anglin had six rebounds, Stenberg had 10 assists, Hine had five assists and Chase had three steals as Nevis improved to 10-3.

"I think the two keys to why this game was decided early was our ability to get the ball inside for good looks at the basket and the fact that Park Rapids didn't have Taylor Kimball on the floor to help alleviate the press," said Nevis head coach Scott Kramer. "I thought we would be able to get the ball inside and I was pleased with the patience our guys had to get good shots all night long. I was happy with the balanced scoring and unselfish play from the guys."

Tyler Ridlon (7), Christian Ridlon (6) and Waller (6) combined for 19 points to lead the Panthers, who made only 6 of 17 free throws.
