After being outplayed in the first period, Eveleth-Gilbert took control the rest of the game in a 5-3 win over the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team Saturday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.


The host Panthers held an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal in taking a 1-0 lead after the first period. McKenna Brand set up Jessica Gapinski at the 9:48 mark for the game's first goal.

Eveleth-Gilbert controlled the second period, firing 20 shots at Park Rapids goalie Shania Johnson while holding the Panthers to only five shots on goal. Amanda Arbogast had a goal and an assist as E-G claimed a 2-1 lead. However, Brand's goal at the 14:16 mark gave Park Rapids a 2-2 tie entering the final period.

Goals by Arbogast and Kayla Moe in the first 1:30 of the final period and Kaylen Erchul's goal at the 7:45 mark gave E-G a 5-2 lead. Mady Vaudrin assisted on Gapinski's second goal of the game at the 8:24 mark to conclude the scoring.

Goalie Vicky Fossland finished with 18 saves as the Golden Bears improved to 5-5. Johnson made 34 saves for the Panthers, who fell to 1-8.

Panthers fall to Prowlers

Kaylee Koop made 19 saves on 20 shots in leading Thief River Falls to a 3-1 win over the Panthers last Tuesday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

Shelby Norlin's goal at the 11:53 mark of the first period gave the Prowlers a 1-0 lead before Emily Bergland's goal 24 seconds into the third period made it 2-0.

Vaudrin assisted on a goal by Brand at the 5:08 mark as the Panthers faced a 2-1 deficit. TRF sealed the win on Jordan Solheim's goal at the 8:05 mark.

Johnson finished with 25 saves, including 13 in the first period, for the Panthers.
