Panthers' defense sparks win

     Applying a full-court press produced a 29-3 run to open the second half that sparked the Park Rapids girls basketball team to a 59-42 win over Sebeka Tuesday night at the Area High School gym.

     The Panthers led 21-19 at the half before opening the second half with an 18-0 run to take control. A 3-pointer by Charity Ridlon, three free throws by Hope Johnson, a layup by Gabie Johnson, jumpers off steals by Ridlon and Bria Wolff, a jumper by Gabie Johnson, a basket off a rebound by Wolff and a layup off a steal by Megan Grimes gave Park Rapids a 39-19 lead with 12:41 to play.

     After a three-point play by Heidi Olson ended that run, the Panthers followed with an 11-0 run. A 3-pointer by Hope Johnson, a jumper by Gabie Johnson, a layup off a steal by Wolff, a jumper by Grimes and a layup by Gabie Johnson extended the Panthers’ lead to 50-22 with 9:50 to play

     A jumper by Justine Rittgers, a 3-pointer by Katie Klein, a jumper by Ridlon and a jumper by Gabie Johnson made it 59-32 with 4:25 to play before the Trojans scored the final 10 points.

     “The first half wasn’t pretty. Our halftime talk consisted of adjusting our zone offense to stretch their zone defense and to come out in a full-court press to force turnovers and get some quick baskets,” said Park Rapids head coach Tina Ridlon. “It was nice to get our first win.”

     Ridlon (13), Gabie Johnson (12) and Wolff (10) scored in double figures to lead a balanced attack for the Panthers, who improved to 1-3 on the season. Grimes grabbed eight rebounds, Hope Johnson and Ridlon had four steals each, and Hope Johnson, Ridlon and Wolff had three assists each.

     Olson finished with 13 points as Sebeka fell to 2-3.

Patriots defeat Panthers

     Four players scored in double figures as Pequot Lakes posted an 89-68 Mid-State Conference victory over the Panthers last Thursday night.

     Vanessa Lane scored 14 points, Haley Wiebolt had 11 points and Kayla Miller scored 10 points as the Patriots claimed a 52-32 lead at the half. Ridlon had 12 points and Klein added 10 points for Park Rapids in the first half.

     Eleven players scored for Pequot Lakes in the second half while Ellery Overmyer, Carly Waggoner and Klein hit 3-pointers for the Panthers after the break.

     Lane finished with 21 points and 16 rebounds, Katie White scored 17 points, Wiebolt added 16 points and Miller chipped in 12 points for the Patriots, who improved to 3-1 on the season.

     Klein finished with 16 points and three steals, Ridlon added 12 points and nine rebounds, Grimes had seven rebounds, Hope Johnson had three steals, and Rittgers had three assists as the Panthers fell to 0-3 in the conference.
