Despite a cold shooting night, the Park Rapids girls basketball team relied on defense to defeat Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 43-31 last Tuesday night at Walker.

The Panthers made only 16 of 63 field goals and 9 of 27 free throws, but used 15 steals and 45 rebounds to pull off the win.

Megan Grimes, Charity Ridlon and Bria Wolff had three field goals apiece as the Panthers built a 24-12 halftime lead.

Ridlon scored 15 points in the second half to preserve the double-digit lead.

Ridlon led the Panthers with 22 points and six steals while Grimes had 9 points, 18 rebounds (including 10 on the offensive end) and four steals. Katie Klein added three assists while Wolff and Gabie Johnson pulled down six rebounds apiece for the Panthers.

Brooke Lund scored 19 points for the Wolves, who fell to 6-16 on the season.

PR-B coasts to win over Panthers

Autumn Ackerman made history as Pine River-Backus coasted to a 77-26 win over the Panthers Thursday night at Pine River.

Ackerman scored 16 points to surpass 1,000 in her career. Ackerman also surpassed 1,000 rebounds earlier in the season to become the first PR-B player to reach both milestones.

Tatum Sheley added 22 points and 12 assists for the Tigers, who led 50-7 at the half and improved to 18-3 on the season.

Grimes led the Panthers with 10 points and six rebounds. No other player reached double figures as Park Rapids fell to 6-16 on the season.
