     A balanced scoring attack and an injury helped the Park Rapids girls basketball team defeat Pelican Rapids 65-48 last Saturday at the Area High School gym.

     Pelican Rapids had to play without its leading scorer when MacKenzie Korf suffered a knee injury on the first possession of the game. Korf, who was averaging 24.2 points and 8.2 assists per game, had led the Vikings to the No. 9 ranking in the state Class AA poll.

     After layups by Lincoln Haiby and Grace Forsgren gave Pelican Rapids an early 4-2 lead, the Panthers responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead for good. A jumper by Charity Ridlon, a three-point play by Katie Klein, a layup off a steal by Ridlon, a basket off a rebound by Megan Grimes and two free throws by Hope Johnson gave Park Rapids a 13-4 lead with 11:34 to play in the first half.

     A basket off a rebound by Ridlon and three inside baskets by Bria Wolff pushed the Panthers’ lead to 24-11 at the 5:23 mark.

     After a pair of jumpers by Ashlee Olson helped the Vikings close the gap to 24-19 with 3:47 to go, Park Rapids used a 3-pointer by Klein and a basket off a rebound by Gabie Johnson to carry a 31-23 lead into the break.

     Pelican Rapids opened the second half with 3-pointers by Ashlyn French and Forsgren to cut the lead to 33-31 with 15:18 to play, but the Panthers responded with a 15-0 run to take control. Ridlon’s pair of jumpers and layup, Klein’s 3-pointer, Wolff’s jumper, Gabie Johnson’s inside basket and Grimes’ layup sparked that run as Park Rapids led 48-31 with 12:10 remaining.

     A jumper by Ridlon, layups by Grimes, Klein, Wolff and Megan Olson, and a pair of jumpers by Emily Dean capped off the win.

     Ridlon tallied a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds while Klein added 13 points and Wolff finished with 12 points. Ridlon also had three assists and joined Klein with three steals.

     French (12) and Forsgren (10) hit double figures for the Vikings, who fell to 18-4 after losing for the third time in the last four games.

Panthers run past Braves

     The Panthers jumped out to a 51-16 halftime lead and coasted to a 77-25 win over Menahga Tuesday night at the Area High School gym.

     Layups by Ridlon, Grimes and Klein and a jumper by Wolff gave the Panthers a quick 10-0 lead before layups by Justine Rittgers and Klein, a basket off a rebound by Ridlon and a 3-pointer by Klein pushed the lead to 21-1 with 14:16 to play in the first half.

     Savannah Kako’s layup at the 12:40 mark gave the Braves their first field goal and Lakyn Anderson followed with a jumper as Menahga trailed 21-7 at the 11:57 mark.

     A jumper by Hope Johnson, a layup by Klein, a 3-pointer by Ridlon, a layup off a steal by Hope Johnson, two baskets by Wolff, a jumper by Gabie Johnson, and a layup and jumper by Olson gave the Panthers a 41-8 advantage with 6:27 to play in the first half.

     Anderson hit a jumper and 3-pointer for the Braves before Park Rapids used a jumper by Rittgers and a 3-pointer by Hope Johnson to build a 51-16 lead at the break.

     Ridlon’s layup, Gabie Johnson’s jumper and Grimes’ three-point play were followed by a pair jumpers by Hope Johnson, a jumper by Gabie Johnson, another three-point play by Grimes and a basket off a rebound by Ridlon as the Panthers led 75-22 with 6:30 to play.

     Klein led the Panthers with 16 points and four assists while Ridlon had 15 points and nine rebounds. Hope Johnson scored 11 points and Grimes pulled down 14 rebounds as the Panthers improved to 11-13.

     Anderson (8) and Kako (7) combined for 15 points to lead the Braves, who fell to 9-15.
