Panthers close out tournament play with wins over Fergus Falls, New Ulm

     One streak ended and another began for the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team at the Fergus Falls Holiday Classic.


     The Panthers’ six-game undefeated streak ended with a 4-2 loss to West Fargo on Dec. 26. Park Rapids began another winning streak with a 4-2 win over Fergus Falls on Dec. 27 and a 4-2 win over New Ulm on Dec. 28.

     Park Rapids ended 2013 with an 8-2-1 record.

West Fargo defeats Panthers

     The Panthers held a 2-0 lead after the first period in the first tournament game before a three-goal third period rallied West Fargo to the win.

     Jamie Stewart and Chase Brand scored in the first period to give the Panthers the early lead. Drew Bade and Connor Kennedy assisted on Stewart’s goal at the 6:38 mark while Noah MacPherson and Dylan Weaver set up Brand’s goal at the 7:39 mark as West Fargo held a 13-6 advantage in shots.

     Stone Sandoval scored at the 5:57 mark of the second period before goals by Riley Vareberg at the 1:22 mark, C.J. Lenzmeier at the 7:21 mark and Tyler Berginski at the 15:07 mark in the third period gave the Packers the win. West Fargo outshot the Panthers 14-6 in the second period and 17-6 in the third period for a 44-18 advantage for the game.

     Goalie Cody Brumbaugh finished with 40 saves for the Panthers. West Fargo improved to 2-5.

Shorthanded goals spark win

     Shorthanded goals by Kennedy and Bade led the Panthers past Fergus Falls.

     Ryan DeLaHunt set up a power-play goal by MacPherson at the 3:03 mark of the first period to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead before Peter Johnson scored at the 16:16 mark to tie the game.

     Kennedy’s shorthanded goal at the 8:18 mark of the second period gave Park Rapids a 2-1 lead.

     The Panthers’ pushed their lead to 3-1 on Stewart’s goal at the 2:35 mark before Sam Rausch’s power-play goal cut the gap to 3-2. Bade’s shorthanded goal into an open net with 20 seconds to play sealed the win.

     Brumbaugh finished with 30 saves as Fergus Falls held a 32-21 advantage in shots. The Otters’ record fell to 5-7.

Panthers defeat New Ulm

     A three-goal second period sparked the Panthers past New Ulm.

     Kiefer Miller and MacPherson set up Brand at the 14:06 mark of the first period to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

     Goals by Kennedy, Luke Jaeger and Bade gave the Panthers a 4-2 lead in the second period. Jaeger assisted on Kennedy’s goal at the 7:08 mark before Brandon Helget scored at the 9:58 mark for New Ulm. Kennedy followed with assists on goals by Jaeger at the 13:33 mark and Bade at the 16:25 mark for a 4-1 lead. Jared Beltz ended the scoring at the 16:45 mark.

     Brumbaugh made 22 saves for the Panthers. New Ulm fell to 6-4 on the season.
