Panthers' 33 hits lead to 28 runs in Mid-State sweep over Rangers

Belting out 33 hits led the Park Rapids baseball team to a Mid-State Conference doubleheader sweep over Crosby-Ironton Thursday at the Area High School diamond.

Tucker Coborn went 4 for 4, Dan Ricke went 3 for 4 and Mitch Long pitched a two-hitter as the Panthers won the first game 12-2 in six innings.

In the second game, the first 14 Park Rapids batters reached base and scored as the Panthers completed the sweep with a 16-0 victory in five innings. Kevin Vaadeland threw a two-hitter in that game.

A five-run first inning in the first game set the tone for the day. Cody Schirmers led off with a double and Coborn followed with an infield single. RBI doubles by Dylan Walsh and Ricke and a two-run double by Danny Pike capped the inning.

A double by Kevin McMorrow and an RBI single by Ricke led to two more runs in the third before Coborn and McMorrow scored in the fourth.

A double by Schirmers, an infield single by Coborn and an RBI single by Paul Dirks led to two more runs in the fifth for an 11-2 lead before Cory Odland doubled and scored on Schirmers' single in the sixth to end the game via the 10-run rule.

Schirmers, McMorrow and Pike added two hits each as the Panthers had 17 hits in the game. Long hit four batters but struck out seven to even his record at 1-1.

The second game was over after the first inning as the Panthers jumped out to a 14-0 lead.

Park Rapids opened the bottom of the first with a double by Schirmers, singles by Coborn and Walsh, a double by Vaadeland, a single by McMorrow, walks to Justin Peterson, Odland and Jack Mercado, doubles by Dirks and Schirmers, singles by Coborn and Walsh, a walk to Vaadeland and a single by McMorrow. A double by Mercado ended the scoring as Park Rapids sent 18 batters to the plate.

Doubles by Schirmers, Coborn and Walsh led to the final two runs in the second.

Walsh went 4 for 4 while Schirmers and Coborn had three hits each as the Panthers pounded out 16 hits. Vaadeland struck out nine over five innings to improve to 1-2 on the season.

The sweep gave the Panthers a 4-2 record in the conference and a 4-5 overall mark. The Rangers fell to 0-6 in the conference and 0-7 overall.
