The Region 1 & 2 Spelling Bee was held Wednesday, Feb. 15 at Northland Community & Technical College in Thief River Falls.
Advancing from local and district competitions, 41 winning spellers in grades five through eight participated in the Regional Spelling Bee. All spellers participated in a written round in the morning with the top 23 spellers advancing to the oral round in the afternoon.
The top four spellers of the Regional Spelling Bee will advance to the Multi-Regional State Spelling Bee March 1 in Fergus Falls and include Daltyn Lofstrom, grade 7, Marshall County Central School District; Spencer Hausmann, grade 5, Park Rapids Area School District; Angel Cullen, grade 6, Thief River Falls School District; and Brianne Laduke, grade 8, Warroad School District. The champion speller of this competition will compete in the National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.

The Spelling Bee is a series of competitions for students in grades 5-8 beginning at the classroom level and progressing on to district, region, state and national levels. Benefits for students include improved spelling, increased vocabulary, learning concepts, developing correct English usage, developing poise in public performance and community recognition for participation.
