Panther Post: Century School offering students targeted services
Park Rapids Minnesota PO Box 111 56470

Nearly one school year ago, a small group of students and staff at Century School in Park Rapids embarked on a new educational journey to reinforce reading, writing, mathematic skills and social skills development.

Fast forward to January, 2013, and TS, or Targeted Services, enrolls 110 students in grades K-8. These students and 10 staff have met late September to early May, from 3:15-5 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday for grades 1-8 and beginning this January, Tuesday for kindergarten.

Targeted services is a free after-school program intended for students in grades K-8 who qualify. The qualifications for the program include below grade-level scores on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment Tests, teacher recommendation, low classroom performance, and administrative recommendations.

The purpose and objective of TS is the same as the mission of the Park Rapids School.

The mission is to work together to prepare today's learners for tomorrow's challenges. Utilizing small groups, technology and intensive instruction, the TS program focuses on reading and math instruction to increase achievement in core subjects.

The goal is to increase achievement levels in language arts, mathematics and personal/social skills that will lead to more students meeting high school competencies and standards. By targeting students below grade level at primary and intermediate levels, success will continue to grow through the student's time in school.

Each learner has a continual learning plan managed by the TS staff. The TS staff confers with the children's teachers who are aware of the individual needs.

Communication continues between these teachers to monitor the continuous progress.

CLPs are often referred to throughout the year to make sure we are working toward these needs.

Century staff report that Targeted Service students are making great gains in their regular education classes since enrolling. Everyone's hard work put together is definitely making a difference in the lives of Century students. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to offer our children this fantastic program!
