One man was killed and another injured in a shooting Sunday night in Duluth's Central Hillside. Police said this morning that they have one "person of interest" in custody.

The most seriously injured victim was shot in the head and died after being transported to St. Luke's hospital, police Lt. Scott Jenkins said. The second man was shot in the leg and not believed to have life-threatening injuries.

"We have one person in custody this morning," Jenkins said. He described him as a "person of interest," adding, "We're not certain whether he's a suspect or not."

Police are expected to release additional information later this morning.

Officers were called to an area near Fifth Street and Second Avenue East at about 10 p.m. on a report of a possible shooting. Police soon found the two victims and began looking for suspects. All available squads, including a canine unit, were called to the area. The crime scene was cordoned off and detectives were called in.

Neighbors said they thought the shooting was related to an earlier police call about a dog dispute. But police Deputy Chief Mike Tusken said, "We don't know if it's the same players."

Earlier Sunday, a group of people in the neighborhood became involved in a dispute over a dog running loose, said Leonte Graves, who described himself as a friend of the man shot in the head. Police were called and appeared to have settled the dispute, Graves said.

But later, one of the participants returned and resumed the fight, Graves said. That provoked the shooting, Graves said. He said the man who was shot in the head had not been involved in the original altercation.
