Offense ignites Panthers
The Park Rapids fastpitch softball team got offensive during a three-game winning streak last week.
In a Mid-State Conference doubleheader last Tuesday, the Panthers combined 20 hits with 26 walks to score 22 runs in sweeping Staples-Motley by scores of 11-10 and 11-6.
The Panthers followed with a season-high 18 hits in an 18-8 victory over Pelican Rapids Thursday.
Lake of the Woods shut down the Panthers' offense on Friday in a 10-2 victory.
Marion Goeden's team entered this week with a 5-5 record in the conference and a 9-6 overall record.
Panthers walk to sweep
The Panthers took advantage of 26 walks to sweep Staples-Motley in a rain-soaked doubleheader last Tuesday.
In the first game, the Panthers trailed 6-0 before using four walks to score twice in the third inning, seven walks to score seven times in the fourth inning, and singles by Shania Johnson, Katelyn Hilmanowski, Ashley Thelen, Lauren Naeve and Olivia Vaadeland to score twice in the fifth inning.
Thelen went 2 for 4 with two runs and Johnson went 2 for 3 as the Panthers drew 16 walks in the game. Vaadeland allowed three earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts for the win.
In the second game, the Panthers capitalized on 10 walks to complete the sweep. Three walks led to two runs in the first while RBI singles by Naeve and Vaadeland led to two runs in the second. Caitlan Isaacson's RBI single produced a run in the third before Lexi Burlingame's bases-clearing double sparked a five-run fourth inning.
Burlingame went 3 for 4 with three doubles, three runs and three RBI and Vaadeland went 3 for 4 with two RBI to pace the Panthers' 13-hit attack. Naeve and Erika Jerger chipped in two hits apiece. Vaadeland gave up six runs on six hits with six strikeouts in another complete-game effort.
Panthers pound Pelican Rapids pitching
The Panthers pounded out 18 hits, including seven doubles and a triple, to defeat Pelican Rapids Thursday.
Doubles by Vaadeland and Johnson led to a run in the second before a double by Thelen, an RBI single by Jerger, an RBI triple by Vaadeland and an RBI single by Burlingame led to three runs in the third.
A seven-run fourth inning gave the Panthers an 11-5 lead. A double by Hilmanowski, an RBI single by Nakkita Buckanaga, an RBI double by Jerger, a two-run double by Burlingame, an RBI double by Johnson and an RBI single by Hilmanowski sparked that inning.
Five walks, a two-run single by Burlingame and RBI singles by Johnson and Buckanaga led to six more runs in the fifth before the Panthers ended the game via the 10-run rule in the sixth on Vaadeland's RBI single.
Vaadeland went 3 for 3 with four runs and three RBI, Burlingame went 3 for 4 with five RBI and Johnson went 3 for 4 with three RBI to lead the Panthers' offense. Jerger, Hilmanowski, Buckanaga and Katie Just had two hits apiece to provide plenty of support for Vaadeland, who allowed eight runs on 11 hits for the win.
LOW shuts down offense
The Panthers' offense was held to only four hits in a loss to Lake of the Woods Friday.
Thelen walked and scored on Vaadeland's sacrifice fly in the first and Vaadeland singled and scored on Hilmanowski's bases-loaded walk in the sixth to account for the Panthers' only runs.
Vaadeland gave up 12 hits and 10 runs in the loss.
